From the WCLO newsroom:

Although Janesville's city council has faced criticism for Monday's trip to Sedona, Arizona, a community leader who joins the council delegation says the visit to the hometown of their city manager choice is normal for a high-level interview.

Mary Willmer-Sheedy, Market President of M&I Bank in Janesville, says she will be sitting in on the council appointments with elected officials in Sedona. M&I Bank also has an office in Sedona, and Willmer-Sheedy says she has business contacts through that office she will speak with as well. She hopes to find out what economic development ideas have worked for Sedona and bring them back to Janesville.

The city is not paying her way for the trip. The council offered the Janesville city manager position to Eric Levitt, pending the results of the visit to Sedona.

It is our understanding she is going as a representative of the Community Panel - not representing the bank. Having a community representative go with seems like a good thing to me! Let's all have an open mind about the importance of selecting a good quality city manager who will have many challenges to face in the coming years.

Will any of the other Janesville banks have a say in the selection of the new city manager?

JCK, when you "write off" an expense, you are marking it as a business-related expense on your tax returns, which might reduce the tax you pay. If M&I wants to pay for her trip so she can (also) visit another M&I branch, that's their private business anyway (you realize they would already have a substantial travel budget).

JCK - are you attacking M&I or Ms. Willmer-Sheedy? You are speculating and something that is probably completely not true. If the city wants her to go then - you, the taxpayer will foot the bill. Don't complain about something that isn't true.

After she visits the bank's Sedona branch Mary will undoubtedly be able to write her trip off as a business expense so M&I customers will pay for it.
