From the WCLO newsroom:

A delegation from Janesville's City Council leaves for Sedona, Arizona in less than a week to inspect the work environment of the council's city manager choice.

Council President Amy Loasching says they'll spend at least $1,500 on airfare and hotel. The budget for the remainder of the trip was not available Wednesday.

Loasching says the delegation is flying into Phoenix Monday night, will drive to Sedona, and meet with community members starting Tuesday morning. The delegation returns on Wednesday to report to the full council.

Here is a good article about sedona and eric levitt. It talks about the 2008 budget and how they spend or don't spend money. It's very interesting.

Hey after the Schieffer years, I'll whine all I want. Is the guy quailified or not. If Yes, send 1 person to verifiy. And not on a PR trip. I would send an unknown person who would already be there, unannounced. While the interview process is taking place here.

I will ask this three times.... Why.. Why ...Why... Would anyone move from Sedona to Janesville... It doesn't make any sense... Apparently this question wasn't asked... If you have been there you would know why I am asking the question...

Yes, open records. Gazette, we want expense reports. Even if they turn out legit, maybe the reason is because we knew we would be asking.

I too think they should submit all their expense reports. If it is on the tax payers tab then it would be the right thing to do. That would maybe return a slight amount of trust from the people.

Without checking out the local scene, the council could be accused of not fulfilling its fiduciary duty to the taxpayers. I think sending 3 members is about the right number and the dollar amount is not exhorbitant to make sure the guy doesn't have skeletons in the closet.

1919 - I'm sure city residency is required of the city manager, so s/he will soon be a city resident and paying taxes in this municipality.

With modern technology, it seems like we could get a god feel for Sedona with out actually going there. Maybe we should all be able to go and see for ourselves.

Do only 3 are taking the vacation/trip. I'd like them to submit all their expense reports to the Gazette when they return and the Gazette to publish them. Fine, upscale restaurants or a family diner? Wine or iced tea?

On a side note, Yuri over on his blog is asking about maybe upping our local sales tax if you are interested in giving him your opinion on that matter.

OK, I answered my own question. I listened to the broadcast and three are going for what looks to be parts of three days. Seems reasonable.

After the Janesville group gets to Sedona, they won't want to come back!

If you've traveled lately you know $1500 MIGHT cover two peoples airfare and lodging. Who cares what the minimum is? How many are going and what is the MAXIMUM?

How about we hire someone locally who is familiar with Janesville and then there would be no need to vacation. Also what do you think the rest of the council in AZ is going to say about this guy? Of course he is going to get glowing reviews from his friends. What do you think they are going to show our delegation? Only the good things this guy has done. There will not be anyone out there to point out things that have not gone as planned. The council is not going to see anything but a dog and pony show from those friends of his in AZ.
Waste of time, waste of money, and a slap in the face to the applicants that were from our area.
Maybe we should allow people who live outside Janesville run for city council here as it makes about the same sense.

Let me get this straight, City of Janesville wont hire someone who lives out of the city limits for their open position at the city works dept, but will hire a guy from Arizona who knows nothing about Janesville, let alone where it even is on a map for the city Manager position? Then probably waste tax payers money to there on a vacation to tour the city!!!
