MADISON, Wis. (AP) A team of Madison-based engineers is competing this week in a million-dollar contest sponsored by the military.

The engineers from Rayovac-Remington are among 48 teams in the Wearable Power Prize contest.

The competition in the California desert is the Pentagon's way of encouraging research into lighter batteries for the battlefield. Troops now carry as much as 20 pounds of batteries to power night-vision devices and GPS units.

The military wants batteries that are half the weight and three times more powerful.

Rayovac spokesman Bill Bushong says his team's entry should meet the military's strict requirements. But anything can go wrong in a 96-hour competition, so he's keeping his fingers crossed.

The winner will be announced Oct. 4.
