Sustainable Janesville committee learns city's eco-progress
From the WCLO newsroom:
The City of Janesville currently employs a variety of eco-friendly activities, such as the purchase of a second landfill compactor.
Acting City Manager Jay Winzenz says the compactor extends the life of the landfill and therefore reduces the amount of land used to dispose of waste. Winzenz gave an update Tuesday night to the Sustainable Janesville Committee about the progress the city has made toward sustainability.
Winzenz says the city may also soon have a second anti-icing unit used to clear city streets in the winter. He says salt brine and beet by-products are used in the units instead of salt and calcium chloride.
The city is also working to accept bill payments online. Winzenz says the project is part of a four-phase replacement of software. The city is currently in phase two, which includes building permit and inspection software. The water utility software that would include online bill payment is planned for next year, but funding to be included in the 2009 note issue has not yet been approved by the city council.
After the presentation, one committee member pointed out that some items on the list provided were enacted for the cost-saving aspect, and the sustainability is an added benefit.
