WHITEWATER—A man hit by a car while crossing the street in his wheelchair Aug. 26 has died, Walworth County Coroner John Griebel said.

Michael Chaloupka, 23, a recent UW-Whitewater graduate originally from Waukesha, died about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday at University Hospital, Madison.

An autopsy is being performed today.

Griebel said he anticipates the cause of Chaloupka's death to be complications from injuries he received in the accident.

Look at the fine print of all similar driving and driving related statutes. She had no intent. She was not drunk or driving eratically. The effect of the driver was greater than others who have driven the same way, but these accidents didn't cause death. So, does that mean the intent was greater? A person can't always be judged by the effects, but rather the cause and intent. The woman will be haunted for life. Let the process complete and hope the families have peace. Then look to help avoid further accidents in similar venues.

Mike was funny, determined and he had a bright future. This is so tragic in so many ways. God Bless him and his family.

Way to stereotype and say that all accidents are caused by young drivers, thats one of the most ignorant things i have ever heard. You mean to say that nobody but young drivers have accidents. I feel sorry for the family and the driver. Oh by the way, what ages do you classify as "young"?

I agree dcsnick1. I would upgrade her citation and ruin her life with vehicular manslaughter. If i had hit him, i would be getting slammed. She did hurt someone bad enough to die from injuries sustained in the accident.

Channel 3000.com said that the citation she recieved for inatentative driving won't change due to his death. Why the .... not. So that means that everyone can drive around, not pay attention and hit someone and be ok. She went around another car, that was stopped for him, so he could cross the street. This is soooooo wrong. If she does'nt get punished the right way at least she will have to live with it for the rest of her life. SLOW DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION YOUNG DRIVERS TO WHAT IS AROUND YOU.

It is sad that a human life is taken for a traffic control light.

Yes, feel sorry for the driver, but remember it was also inattentive driving when students were starting to return to the UWW area.

Definitely empathizing with the family as Whitewater is a very difficult city to drive, walk, bike, whatever.

Let's not forget about how the driver must feel. My sympathies to the driver as well as the young man's family and friends.

Yes this is a tragedy. However I drive Main Street everyday and have observed students crossing where they want to and when they do cross at these intersections they do not activate the crosswalk signs. I have had people just run right out in front of my vehicle without looking to see if it was safe to cross. When the lights do get activated they are very noticable. Yes more needs to be done here but everyone needs to work together including activating the crosswalk signs to cross and only cross in the crosswalks.

I agree, mile. That intersection begs for a stop and go light. The city recently installed a flashing overhead light, a fluoscent green crosswalk and signage but I don't think it is sufficent. This is a tragedy that could likely have been avoided with a stop and go light.
May he rest in peace and his family find solace in their faith and the support of one another.

"Local residents and students have complained about intersections on Main Street leading to the campus as dangerous. At the end of last semester, the city installed electric warning pedestrian signs in an effort to prevent accidents. Chancellor Richard Telfer met with the Whitewater City Council Sept. 2 to request further safety measures at the Whiton and Cottage intersections."

I went to high school and college with Mike, and it is certainly a tragedy that this accident happened. However, this exact situation has happened before, and I think that the City of Whitewater needs to examine a more effective way of stopping traffic at this area. My heart goes out to Mike and his family.
