Group wants Obama, McCain to commit to Great Lakes
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ An environmental advocacy group is asking the presidential candidates to make Great Lakes restoration a priority.
Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle is scheduled to give the keynote address Thursday morning at the 4th Annual Great Lakes Restoration Conference in Milwaukee.
Conference attendees plan to develop policy recommendations for the next president and Congress. Organizers have invited representatives from the both presidential campaigns to discuss their candidates' environmental and Great Lakes platforms.
The conference is sponsored by Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition. The group wants the candidates to support a $20 billion federal plan to restore the lakes. The plan's goals include preventing contamination and cleaning up toxic pollution.

As the Great Lakes represent a critical freshwater resource for the United States, I don't see why there should be no federal role. Having national law behind protecting the lakes will bring consistency and clarity to any remedial effort.
.
The plan in question has been circulating in committee since 2006, despite broad support from legislators in the affected states.

The Federal Government should absolutely step in. International shipping into the Great Lakes brought with it a host of invasive species and pollution.
The Great Lakes represent one fifth of the worlds surface freshwater. Being a country that is suddenly concerned about their carbon footprint, shouldn't we be concerned about this extremely delicate ecosystem?

This shouldn't be the responsibility of the federal government. All the states involved in the Great Lakes Compact should be responsible.
