From the WCLO newsroom:

President Bush is expected to announce Tuesday troop withdrawals of combat troops from Iraq, while local soldiers prepare to be sent there.

Soldiers from Janesville and Beloit are part of the largest Wisconsin National Guard operational deployment since World War II. The Guard's 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and six other units received the mobilization order this week that will call up as many as 3,500 soldiers for an active duty mission in Iraq. The units will report for duty in mid-February, then train in Texas for about two months before they deploy overseas.

They'll spend about ten months of the year-long deployment in Iraq.

My brother Chuck and one of my best friends Mark are both deploying to Iraq with the Wisconsin Guard. Chuck will be on his 2nd deployment and Mark on his 3rd. They are typical of the American soldier, doing their duty without complaint or compromise. They both leave behind wives and children and are putting their lives on hold to serve their nation. Whether or not you support our presence in Iraq, please don't denigrate the unassuming everyday Americans that are just doing their duty as they see it.

To our elected leaders, I ask that you ensure you make wise decisions regarding national security as it is the line soldier and their families that pay the price for our decisions.

My heart sincerely goes out to the soldiers and the families as loved ones are separated. A wonderful young man with enormous promise in a group I work with has also enlisted and may soon be sent out. Sadly, as this war becomes so personal and more have to sacrifice so much for it, perhaps more people will also come to understand the folly and take action to demand a swift end to it.

Whether or not the Packers have a winning season or not doesn't matter when there are real life matters like this. To any troops reading this: We support you, love you and will pray for all of your safe returns.
