$4 gasoline a boon to some Wisconsin tourist stops

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — One northern Wisconsin summer attraction found $4-a-gallon gasoline a boon for summer business.

“We got a lot more people from Minnesota this year. Maybe they weren’t going to California or Texas or whatever,” said Duane Domaszek, co-owner of Wildwood Wildlife Center of Minocqua, a zoo with one of biggest animal encounter areas in the Upper Midwest. “We have been all right.”

The summer looked like it could be a bad one for Wisconsin tourism with a faltering economy, high gas prices and June flooding. But a check of some major destinations found little evidence of gloom and doom as Labor Day neared.

One Door County resort had what a manager called a “phenomenal” season, and quarterly room taxes were up $6,000 through June in the playground of Minocqua, Arbor Vitae and Woodruff.

Tourism Secretary Kelli Trumble said the summer got off to a “rocky start” in June, when up to 16 inches of rain flooded dozens of southern Wisconsin counties — including tourism mecca Wisconsin Dells where Lake Delton overflowed and drained. The perception was the whole state was under water.

But July and August were busy months, at least for the major destinations, Trumble said.

“What we have found is vacationing and getting away is something that people are not willing to compromise on, especially in these times,” she said. “They need that getaway to refresh and recharge and reconnect with family.”

i agree... if anything, the increase in gas prices has helped quite a few locally owned businesses... if it wasn't for the levy collapsing in Lake Delton, we would've goneback to the same motel/resort we stayed at... very quaint, and the memories will stay with us always... we had more fun there than at Noah's Arc...

Even though gas was high, it is still cheaper to drive than to fly somewhere. I know we did several weekend getaways rather than one big week.

Our family has been doing "The Alphabet Game" for years. We have a list on the wall of our den of all of the Wisconsin cities in alphabetical order. During the week we try to find something interesting to see in the next city on the list, and (time permitting) we head there on the weekends. (The advent of computers has been a great help)! We've been doing this six years and are almost through the D's.
Together we've made a giant scrapbook with pics and souvenirs of each and every trip. Dickeyville is next; any suggestions are welcome! :)

Makes sense to me. I think some of the big national tourist attractions might see some decline, like Disneyland maybe, but the high gas prices won't force people to not take vacation, they'll just take vacation closer. In a way it could be a good thing; people will discover just how many great vacation spots are so close by. I'd rather just go to Door County anyway.
