Two seriously injured in Milton area crash
From the WCLO newsroom:
Four teen-agers are hurt, two seriously, following an accident on Highway 26 just north of Milton early Thursday night.
The Rock County Sheriff's Office reports 17-year-old Tiffany Duffy of Madison stopped for the stop sign on County "N" at Highway 26 just before 6:00 last night, but then pulled into the intersection. A north bound semi broad-sided her SUV.
Duffy and passenger 17-year-old May Cho of Madison were treated and released, but two other passengers., 18-year-old Xis Vas and 15-year-old Hannah Zhang of Madison were seriously injured and taken to UW hospital, one by Med Flight.
Duffy was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign. The semi driver from Canada wasn't seriously hurt. Highway 26 was closed for 3 1/2 hours.
All the teens were wearing seat belts.

The other problem at this intersection is that people pass on the right of the vehicles trying to turn at that the intersection. When there is an extra lane on the right of the vehicle at certain intersections and they have a solid white line; you are not to pass a vehicle on the right turning. Those lanes are for turning left or right and not passing lanes. The ones with the dotted white lines are the passing lanes. This is a big problem at this intersection also. I drive to this intersection everyday during the week and it is horrible to get out when everyone is trying to get to work. I agree, something needs to get done here, but what is another thing. Does anyone remember when they put out the wreaths for each death at that intersection. It was something to see and quite the eye opener.

What is the speed limit on 26 at that intersection???
.
Is it enforced???
.
If it isn't, THERE is the problem.

Read the DOT website for WIS. Hwy 26 corridor expansion project segment 3 Milton to Fort. We still need something done temporarily... lights-reduced speed-personal responsibility!

Trucks, some weighing 70 or 80 thousand pounds, coming down the hill on Northbound 26, going 55 or 60 mph, gain a lot of momentem. I doubt they could stop in time if a stoplight turned yellow, then red..I hope the new hy 26 will take care of this situation.

After living out here for so long on cty rd n, you see so much, the police sit out here on n but doesn't seem to stop too many speeders. maybe the cops should sit on the corner of 26 & n,,,,to stop all this or some of this...

I was at the stopsign, next to the vehicle that was hit, and waiting to make a right turn south on Hwy 26. The driver of that vehicle also did not see the car coming from the left and came close to being hit from the left side also. I was watching the traffic from the left and did not see the truck coming from the right until the car was hit. It is typical for truck drivers to go through that intersection at 60 or more mph. There have been too many accidents there since as it is difficult to cross during times when traffic is heavy on Hwy 26. I agree that there should at least be flashing lights with a speed reduction to less than the posted 45 mph.

I believe they said that she "stopped", but then pulled out into the intersection. I'm guessing she didn't time the speed/distance of the semi and those who were sitting in the back of her SUV recieved the blunt of the impact.

So the stop sign with the flashing red light wasn't enough to make the driver stop?

It’s a scary intersection, and I am praying for all involved-and that no one else has the same thing happen there.
Quite unrelated, but an opportunity to ask: Did anyone else witness the accident, or the aftermath of the accident, in Milton’s Goodrich Park across from Seventh Day Baptist Church last Sunday evening, Oct. 26? There were at least 6 emergency vehicles-I think even more. The park sign was wiped out, a large chunk of a tree bark was taken out (but the tree still stood there), and a car sat crumpled up maybe 100 feet inside the park. We witnessed this quite a while after the first sirens were heard, so they were there for a very long time. When we passed much later, we saw that the perimeter of the NW corner was lined with all types of emergency vehicles and police cars, and an ambulance was leaving the park lawn, but heading south, not toward the local fire department (sirens weren’t on in it, so it was either from another city, or it was too late to use them). Very early the next morning the whole tree was removed, along with the remaining park sign post. I listened to the radio the next day, watched the Gazette, then read the Milton Courier when it came out on Wednesday, and no mention on any accident in that spot, large or small. But there was mention in the Courier of 3 other accidents, including another one in Milton that same day. A friend asked someone on the Courier, and they had no reports of anything happening there.
It’s not a morbid curiosity, (I hope), but it was just too big of a thing to not be mentioned in the news.

Stoplight, stoplight, stoplight!! The price to install a light at this intersection is far worth it to save lives. Too many die at this intersection, for whatever reason, and a stoplight could fix that.

I have crossed there many times...they need flashers on STH 26, both north and south bound. CTH N already has rumble strips.

Visibility plays a role to some extent. However the bigger problem is trying to coordinate with the other driver sitting at the stop signs on county N. The scenario plays like this. 2 cars at the stop signs on Co. N. You look at the driver and wave them across or vice versa. But someone is hesitant. Alert drivers now check traffic on Hwy. 26 again as 3-10 seconds have just passed. Now with this going on, traffic on hwy. 26 is steam rolling down the hill or coming from a long straight away. They are unaware of the song and dance the stop sign drivers are playing. Eventually someone says good god already and pulls out without double checking again and crash. Been there done that. I'm not sure how to correct this without a 4 way stop.

Too often, the last sentence of stories like this, read just the opposite. Them wearing their seat belts probably saved the girls lives and I hope they pull through.

I have seen many close calls at this intersection. I don't think it's so much that they don't see anyone coming. I think it's that they think they can beat the approaching vehicle across Hwy 26. It seems to happen daily.
Why someone at a dead stop would think they can beat a vehicle traveling between 45-60 mph is beyond me.
I hope everything turns out well for those girls, of course.

There may be a small hill, but the line of sight is >1/8 mile in either direction, and at 60mph that's >7.5 seconds. Most people are in a hurry, look once then take off. Look left and right, look left and right again, and continue to look left and right as you enter the intersection... it could save your life. Drive with your headlights on too (most newer vehicles automatically do this), it increases your vehicles visibility significantly; less chance of others pulling out in front of you. oh, and slow down!
My condolences go out to those involved. However, lets not blame the intersection and take the need to be responsible out of the drivers hands.

The area at that intersection has a small hill with a slight curve just south of it and the view is obstructed because of it.I have come close at this same intersection more then once because of the hill. Highway 26 is the site of many accidents and I dont understand why. My heart is with the family of all these kids and hope they are ok.

That intersection has had a lot of accidents. Why is it that people can't see something as large as a semi ??? The line of sight doesn't seem to be blocked, yet way too many accidents occur...STRANGE !!!!
