City funding cut for Tallman House

From the WCLO newsroom:

Those involved with Janesville's Tallman House can expect less money from the City of Janesville in the 2009 budget.

Acting City Manager Jay Winzenz says the city cannot turn the site over to the Rock County Historical Society as a way of cutting costs because the Tallman Trust does not allow the site to be directly deeded to another group.

During a budget study session Wednesday, the council debated whether to cut funding in half or altogether, and ended up compromising by reducing the subsidy by just over $22,000. That means the Tallman House should receive $31,000 in a subsidy and $4,400 for grounds maintenance.

Several council members noted the Tallman House had been warned last year that funding would be cut.

Good idea, wahoo.... . Or, how about turning it into a Bed and Breakfast with wet bars. Or, maybe a regular bar located around the hole on that secondfloor hallway.

The rooms could have big screen TVs specifically for Packer fans, Bear fans, and other teams.

The Old Railsplitter's connection to the house is too slight to be taken seriously.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of beer, but since honest Abe's birthday is in February, I think the weather will be a major turnoff for tourists and beer drinkers alike.

Not a bad thought. Especially if it were done in conjunction with Gray's. Or, if perhaps they do like the Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien and host a 'rendevous' type gathering...they could have 'pioneer' types show people how beer used to be made back in the day...

Maybe they should put up a beer tent.

Regardless of whether or not "Several council members noted the Tallman House had been warned last year that funding would be cut," I think it would be good for the council members to look back at the agreement from decades ago when the Tallman family deeded the property to city with conditions...including upkeep and maintainance.

On another note, this city needs to promote the good things it has going for it...which, believe it or not, include not only the Tallman House, but also the Rotary Gardens, and the other wonderful parks and recreational areas provided.

Coming up in February of 2009 is the 200th anniversary of President Lincoln's birth. The Tallman House is the only private residence still standing in Wisconsin where Lincoln once slept--you would think the city would be trying to find ways to promote that, get more tourists here to see the Tallman treasure...

Sad to cut something that is part of the history of Janesville. Maybe more bike trails amd parks are needed. Maybe a pay cut to the over paid in the city would be an option. The city dont allow payment plans like Rock Co. for court fines, if they would it would generate a cash flow to use in our city budget. To not allow this and only suspend drivers license for unpaid fines the city loses alot of money. as most ordinance violations unpaid do not have to sit any jail time either and the unpaid fines that do require jail time is on the tax payers shoulders.(3 meals and a cot) Something to ponder IMO
