WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) A 20-year-old Wausau mother is charged with misdemeanor child neglect after her baby tested positive for cocaine days after he was born.

Court records say the amount of cocaine found in Elizabeth L. Hoade's baby indicates he was exposed to the drug two or three days before his birth on June 8.

The criminal complaint says Hoade told police she used tobacco while pregnant but not cocaine.

The complaint says social workers have placed the baby in foster care.

A doctor told investigators the long-term effects of the baby's exposure to cocaine cannot be fully evaluated for many years until a developmental screening can be completed.

The maximum sentence for misdemeanor child neglect is nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Hothands- It's not that this story isn't news worthy. I grew up in the burbs of Chicago and if a news story was written everytime a baby was born addicted to something, there wouldn't be room for other news. It's just hard for you to stomach the gross neglect of this women because it's not an everyday occurance in Janesville. Even though it's very sad there are crack, coke, meth, herion, alcohol addicted babies born everyday all over the US. In major cities it's as common as drunk drivers are in WI. If WI did a news story on every DUI there would be nothing else in the news.

MOMOF2, ewww...I would hate to know those people. I hope they are not your friends. Locked up to go shopping. NICE. I would have to say this is better than coke in a poor little 3 day old peanut. Grrrrrr. I would love to shove that coke down the mother's throat and watch her gag on it.

We need to let officerfriendly read this blog. He/She proposes (on another blog) we legalize drugs to reduce crimes committed associated in getting drug money. I wonder how many more stories we would read like this if drugs were legal?

Its really sad what people do to their kids. I agree with hothands Rock County lets people get away with to much. I've know people who leave kids locked up and leave them alone and go shopping they got busted but still have kids. I know someone else who was in a drug bust with baby she got her baby back. Makes no sense to me

give the kid the chances, not the parents. lock the parents up or ship them all off to a crack island to do whatever it is they do to each other. quick fix.

I worked in a children’s group home in Janesville several years ago, and sadly what I have seen of the Rock County CPS left a very foul taste in my mouth. I have not dealt with CPS in other areas so I do not know if it’s the organization itself, or just this county. The parents of these children are given far too many chances to keep messing up. Hopefully this little ones future will be much brighter now. Im sure not everyone will love this statement, but I think we should be allowed to sterilize these women. I know of one lady that had at 5 babies, all addicted to drugs at birth. One died in infancy and another lives her little life as a struggle every day. If we can’t do it permanently, then we sure should be able to do some sort of temporary sterilization. Or put them some where for the duration of the pregnancy that wouldn’t allow them to get their fingers on drugs.

This is news because it is part of an epidemic. Drunk driving, babies being born with coke in their system, a nation falling to the effects of addiction. People loosing their jobs, domestic abuse both male and female, robbery, murders. All having a high percentage of addicts causing them. Booze and drugs when used by an addicted person can and do cause these things. THIS IS WHY IT IS NEWS! We need to put a huge spotlight on it. Those who think not are those addicts who refuse to admit their own addictions. By the way, I did say a high percentage caused by addictions, not all.

What a disgusting person! Nine months to bring the baby into the world, nine months to free the crackhead "mom" of the burden of bringing a baby into the world!!! I hope she gets the help she needs, but never gets that little peanut back....ever!!!

It’s a sad statement of our society if we feel that a two day old baby testing positive for cocaine is not news worthy. I do not work with pregnant woman crack users or otherwise, I think this baby deserves the few minutes of recognition for the trials facing his little life. Perhaps if more were aware of the severity of the problem we’d work harder on solutions.

Why is this news? I have worked with women in this exact situation in Rock county- several times. Why is this news? Is this a prominent woman or what?
