WATERTOWN, Wis. (AP) Hungry customers took their burgers to go when fire broke out at the McDonald's restaurant in Watertown.

The McDonald's along Highway 26 caught fire shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday and was declared a total loss within a couple hours. All the patrons and employees got out of the building safely.

More than 40 firefighters from five departments worked the fire.

Watertown Fire Chief Henry Butts says there was no extinguishing system in the restaurant, but one was not required.

McDonald's was one of the few fast food options in town after the Burger King recently closed.

Thanks for mentioning Asia Buffet, I've been waiting to see a story about it. Drove by the other night to see all the emergency vehicles but no story, but a fire in a town an hour away, yea that trumps the fires in this town!

I'm so glad to see my local paper can tell me of the fire in Watertown at McDonalds yet no mention of the FIRE AT ASIA BUFFET MONDAY NIGHT AROUND 6:30 FLAMES WERE COMING OUT OF THE ROOF SO THEY CAN'T SAY IT WAS TO MINOR TO REPORT! Thanks Gazette and you wonder why readership is down........

Yeah, of course it took a few hours to burn, we wouldn't want to have our red meat undercooked would we? I wonder if the resturaunt will get rebuilt...

I grew up in that area. I had all my bday parties as a child there. And that would be in the 70's. The building was updated awhile back but it might be local code rules which didn't require the system. It will be weird to drive by and not see it there. Guess McD's serves Toast now?

Good thing it took a couple of hours to fully burn. Some of the people I see eat there need that extra time to move.

That's because it has been there for a over 15 years. It was probably built before the codes were introduced.

Why wouldn't they be required to have an extinguishing system? Its a restraunt and its a public place. I would like to think if my family and I were going to eat in there and a fire happened there would be something to help contain the fire until firefighters could get there. I find it kinda odd!

Find it a little odd that a restaurant doesn't require an extinguishing system.

Keep your "flame broiled" jokes to yourselves everyone. That's Burger King and it's not funny........well, maybe a little bit.
