JANESVILLE--The Janesville School District’s Web site was taken down Monday after a link to a computer virus was discovered.

The link was to the same virus that attacked the district’s computer system Sept. 19 and forced the district to take the Web site down at that time.

Part of the virus’ attack included installing a link to itself in the district’s Web site, said Brandon Keirns, manager of information technology. So when someone accessed the site, the virus tried to download itself.

The problem reappeared when someone was updating the Web site Monday. The person used a version of a district Web page that still contained the link to the virus, Keirns said.

The Web site should be repaired within 24 hours, Keirns said Monday afternoon.

The Gazette didn't report on it because problems with Charter Telephone are not new nor are they news worthy and most certainly are not related to a virus on a computer system at the school.

Of course the repair tech or call center person you speak to will be happy to shift blame onto another entity.

Some services are too important for me to trust to any cable company - a dial tone is one of them.

What the gazette did not report (they may of been unaware)was that in the area of Parker High School alot of people who subscribe to charter for phone, cable, and or internet were affected because of this virus in the school. My phone did not work for 24 hours and my internet was shooting me out of the web constantly, luckily my cable T.V. was working unlike many of my neighbors. I was told on Friday that Charter was unable to schedule to come and fix my phone (they are usually required to fix within 12 hrs) until the following Monday. On Saturday I along with many other's recieved personal calls from Charter. Evidently, Parker High School was sending out signals to Charters main box and all people in Parker High School radius were being affected. Because, of the volume of calls in our area Charter sent out emergency personal to uncover problem. Parker High School had to shut down all lines until they could internally fix there problems. On Sunday again my computer was not allowing me to get into the internet unlike my other family members. When placing a call to Charter to troubleshoot problem they felt that it was possible, because of my computer being on when getting the signals from Parker that my computer could also be infected with this lovely virus that school is dealing with. Luckily, after sweeping my computer and shutting down the computer it was saved. Public beware of this problem that the school district is facing could affect you even though your not even on the school districts web page. I wouldn't want anyone to have to face issues that I had to this last weekend. Whoever thought this sending of a virus to the school was a good idea I dearly hope you are found and have to pay for all the damages that you have caused everyone.

Maybe it's time that the school district had an IT controls audit. There seems to be underlying issues with this 'virus.'

Kudos to the IT department for taking down the site quickly after notification.

Most antivirus software will block it before it even gets to your PC. This just underscores the importance of running antivirus software - even the free software works well for most threats.

Trish - Yes, I haven't had a problem since installing the free home version of Avast! on my home computer. I had the free anti-virus AGV software installed before Avast!, and never had trouble, either.

Hmmm. I was trying to email a teacher yesterday and it said that mailbox didn't exist. Then, today my anti-virus popped up while I was on the district site. My anti-virus seemed to block whatever it was.
