Wis. officials help residents find sex offenders
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsin officials are helping residents find sex offenders to prepare for a safe Halloween.
State Corrections Secretary Rick Raemisch says the state's sex offender registry site will temporarily link to the Family Watchdog Web site. That plots offender homes on maps that are searchable by address.
He says the link will be taken down after Halloween, though officials are working on a long-term mapping option.
While Wisconsin continues its search for offenders that dodge the registry, the state has 90 percent compliance compared to 70 percent nationwide.
Sex offenders are prohibited from participating in Halloween activities.

Mass Hysteria is correct. Lean and Walk are intelligent. The gazette is wrong. Only sex offenders on probation are restricted. Remember that every sex offender has a family and most live with their families. The families can participate in this holiday. They can answer the door, they can trick or trick. The offenders have spouses, kids, grandmothers, sisters and brothers. Do not create hysteria and hurt families that have already been hurt by crime. Most of them will take a lifetime to recover. Most of the victims are within the family. Protecting all children and families should be the job of the Gazette. Do not create hysteria. Be smart, be safe. Again, listen to Walk and Lean - these are smart people.

This is true Janesvillean. That is an over-used term. It is also important to read the message on the Wisconsin website stating that these restrictions only apply to those still on supervision.
For anyone about to write that I am a bleeding heart, I will say that I have been raped in my life as well as touched inappropriately as a child. But I believe in forgiveness as well as leaving the judging to God. It is our responsibility to protect our children but not by judging others without knowing the whole story.

Concern for safety is always important, but this is something best described as a mass hysteria. There has, as of last year, never been a case of stranger molestation connected to trick-or-treating. In fact, many "sex offenders" have never touched a child at all, let alone a stranger.

When I was a kid, it was the razor blade in the apple. Also just an urban legend. There was only one proven case of poisoning linked to Halloween candy, long after I heard the story, and it turned out to be the child's own father who did it.

Yes, safety is a concern, but use common sense. Kids should not trick-or-treat alone, for instance, and candy should be examined for tampering, or a parent should accompany them and only visit homes where the person is known to them. This will take care of the fears. The largest public health concern, though, is children getting hit by cars after dark. Since this actually happens, it might be worth some more actual concern. Have your kids trick-or-treat early, or make sure they wear reflective costumes and avoid vision-obscuring masks (and take a flashlight that will bob and weave as they walk) and avoid long costumes that can lead to a trip. Thankfully many costume providers have complied and costumes in 2008 are much safer than they used to be.

Make sure you double check where you are on the map, Its show me about 2 blocks away from where I live forever, I've even confronted them about it. They said they would work with google maps to get it fixed.... google maps has the correct location of my house!
Also shows sex offenders that live on my street as living on the next street over...
It was fine for my previous address, i dnot know whats up with it now.

how about we go about it preemptively and put yard signs in front of victims' homes? that way we know to watch out before they become sex offenders.
no, with the list already so long, what with serious crimes like public urination and statutory rape, we have plenty of targets for the witch hunt.

What really makes me sick is looking at the map (thank you Moved out) and seeing how many offenders live near our schools. That is scary.

bubba4me~ I will give you that yes SOME offenders are getting the benefits from going to classes and doing their "time." I was offended when I was younger. The man got 1 yr Rock County Jail, 5 yrs probation and 20 yrs registered sex offender. As far as I know he is doing good and not getting in trouble. The sad part is I was 17 when it happened and I was consenting. But the law didn't see it like that. There are many cases like this. I feel bad for some of them but not many. I do think that we as parents need to do more to get it out into the public where these men/women live and what they are registered for.
