Economy produces more overcrowding at Rock Co Humane Society
From the WCLO newsroom:
A grant contest could help the Rock County Humane Society reduce overcrowding.
In a manner of speaking, the Humane Society is a no-kill shelter for dogs. That means any animal that's healthy, treatable and pet quality is saved. Executive Director Chris Konetski says the same is not true for cats based on the amount of cats at the shelter. She says last month, more than 300 cats came in to the shelter. Between the cats and dogs, the shelter can only hold about 250 animals. Foster families help relieve the burden.
The shelter is participating in an online grant challenge, where shelters with the most votes earn a $1,000, $10,000 or $25,000 grant.

I like our vet, he comes right out to the farm and will put down a sick/old pet for us. That way we can burry them right in our yard and not have the added expense of creamating them.

As for what the humane society does now, I am not sure, but about 17 years ago I know they took them to the city dump after euthanizing them . A dump employee told me about it when we were there once. How sad...

Polert..
I believe they use mass cremation. I certainly hope they don't just dump them, that would be disrespectful.
I wish I had room to take in as many animals as I wanted, I went into the humane society about a month ago because my cat ran away and I went to see if she was there... There were so many cats ( I didn't want to see the dogs) in cages, just begging me to take them home. My heart broke for each and every one of them. I feel so badly for these poor little angels that have to die because nobody can afford to take them in. It is just horrible.

I would like to know what they do with Animals they destroy. Do they give them a nice resting hole, do they send them to be ashed, or do they just go to the dump. I hope either ash, or holed.

When I was around nine or ten we had to take my cat to the humane society, my mom was getting a divorce and we couldn't take the cats to the place we were moving to. They were very nice. I don't know what ever happened to her. But later on when we wanted a dog we went there and "resuced one." I have always really liked this shelter.

The Gazette's link allows you to give food for free, and then vote. After you click to give food for free, it takes you to the voting site. It's in a box above the "Thank You" along the top of the second page ("With your help, your favorite shelter could win a $25,000 grant! Vote Now!") Why not give food for free, and then vote? either way, VOTE!

Please be sure you go to the following link:

The Gazette link provided takes you to the Animal Rescue site, but the "Click to give free food and care" is not the shelter voting site.

It's sad in a time like this the blacklisting would occur. No, let's keep the dogs, let them go kennel crazy until they are no longer "pet quality" and then put them down.
I, too, have had a dog who never before jumped a 4 foot fence do so, and got hit by a car. I know what you mean. My kids and I were devestated.

I voted, too. But what makes me sad is I cannot ever adopt a dog for the Rock County Humane Society. About 12 years ago, my dog was hit by a car. We did not live in Janesville at the time. We could barely muster the courage to scrape our dog off the road, wrap him in his favorite blanket and bury him under his favorite climbing tree. We did not know he had to be processed by a vet to make sure he was not abused or neglected. Now we are permanently banned form ever adopting a dog from the Rcok County Humane Society. We are a very loving family. Our dog was 12 when he passed. Currently we have 3 dogs we got from the newspapers, not puppy mills, and we have room and the means to love and care for more.
