JANESVILLE—Complaints of companies selling magazines and other items door-to-door have been received by the Janesville Police Department.

The department, in a press release issued today, warns residents to be careful when buying items from door-to-door solicitors.

“It’s is not a good practice to give checks, cash or any payment without first researching the company if you do not know who they are.’’

Some solicitors use pressure or give false information to make a sale, according to the press release. “If you do not feel comfortable with making a purchase from a door-to-door salesperson do not make the purchase.’’

Questions should be directed to Officer Chad Sullivan at (608) 755-3077.

I had a girl come to my door also the other day. Long , straight blonde hair, saying she was in her 3rd year of college and interning at the BBC ( British Broadcasting Network). She also said she lived around the corner and her dad thought she should meet her neighbors and earn her own way to London. She showed me a flimsy brochure and said we would buy the books or magazines and they would, inturn deliver them to a childrens hospital. I kept asking her " Where do you live again?" because I had NEVER seen her before. And she stood about 5 inches from me.. Very strange.. Of course I said No!!

Yesterday a young man came to my door saying that he lived up the street and his mother wanted him to meet the whole block. He asked me if i have heard of John Madden and that he wanted to take his job someday after he goes to London for schooling. Oh, but he needed to sell some children books so he could make enough money for the school. I said no thanks and i shut the door. I watched him out the window as he ran off my porch and out into the street to flag down a full size white window van. He proceeded to jump in and the van took off at a high rate of speed out of site! I could not help to think about the deaths on I90 from the last bunch of kids caught in this type of scam...

I had a girl come to my door telling me about doing itern work in London and that her parents wanted her to earn her way. I told her I couldn't afford to buy anything took her a long time to accept no for an answer!! She was a very smooth talker even offered to do chores if I helped her at all!! Beware!

Are these people from the same company that those kids who died on the interstate were from? I remeber them coming to our house trying to sell magazines. We actually talked to them for quite awhile. We never bought any though. Then a few days later they were in that accident. It was very sad. Personally I do not buy from anyone coming to my front door. If a friend of mine's child has a fund raiser for school I might buy something. I don't know why I trust one and not the other. I just do. But some of them sure know how to work you good.

we got nailed by a sales kid over by weathering hills. the book company is called "prestige sales, llc." like everyone else, he's trying togo to london. reading the sales receipt right now, i can cancel my order within three days of purchase. but here's the catch. there's no phone number to call just an address to send in receipt. well, by the time they get it back, it will be well past the three days. the company is based in phoenix...

I have been hit up three times in the last month at Janesville Travel Center off Hwy 14 by people tell me they need money for gas to get home, I replied I was looking for a few dollars myself. They worked each customer there. I noticed a common feature of each which were burn marks on both upper, and lower lips. Each time the Janesville PD showed before I returned to my after car paying up for my gas. Then that person was poof out of sight. Nice job JPD. Those Janesville Travel Center employees seem to keep a one on things pretty good there.

The funny thing it wasn't an American Flag either. It might have been the State flag, I don't know she showed it to me really fast..

I was at Sentry shopping and a lady ran up to me literally! and asked me if I woul buy a flag for the soldiers in Afghanastan.
I said no, and she ran up to the front of the store. I saw her put this flag on the shelf counter and then buy something. It was really weird. I did not see anyone else trying to sell flags. I had never had anyone approach me inside a store before either..

sounded like spreading the waistline more than spreading the wealth.

I don't mind solicitations from local groups trying to raise funds, but these other nutballs are the reason I shut off my doorbell.

polert, you're not admitting to "Spreading the Wealth Around" are you? Seems like that would go against nearly all of your previous posts.

I am a real sucker I have found to any youth group. I get nailed at work, and at home. I always remember selling candy bars, pizza, spirit cards, and you name it when I was young. So when they come to the door out comes the wallet. Let me know if anyone wants a candy bar to eat while on the web because I am sure I have about 15 in the freezer from past years.

Pretty soon these people won't have to scam us. They will get all the sanctioned hand outs they need through Obama. Soon after that I'll have to start soliciting! "Spare some change?"
*
But seriously. I can't buy something if I don't trust the source, and I give to Goodwill all the time and sometimes to Salvation army. I will never buy or give if I don't feel comfortable about it. It's very sad people will steal from you anyway they can, TRUST your instincts! Especially when you have doubts. Do you ever wonder why these solicitors always have 'stories' to go along with their salespitch?

I have a "no soliciting" sign on my house, yes I had a person come to my house years ago trying to sell me magazines so they could go to London for school. I told them I had never been to London myself and then I asked them what happens if I don't get my magazines while they are in London. No answer.

Last week a man came to my door trying to sell me salvation if only I would believe in his God. I was polite, but did not buy. Before I know it the Easter Seals lady will be knocking. I missed her last year, but I have to donate because she knows my Mom, and they talk...
