BTC might hire instructors to keep up with demand

Blackhawk Technical College likely will hire a few instructors this school year in order to keep up with the continually rising enrollments.

Local layoffs are the major factor in the enrollment increase. With SUV production coming to an end at the Janesville General Motors plant in December, the upsurge is expected to continue.

BTC President Eric Larson told the BTC Board at its meeting Wednesday that he soon would propose new, limited-term hires of instructors in the office technology and certified nursing assistant programs.

Larson said he’s also looking at hiring another counselor on a limited-term basis because counselors are having a hard time keeping up with demand.

The college also will ask some faculty members to help out for two or three hours a week in student services and administrative tasks connected with the nearly 22 percent increase in the number of full- and part-time students this fall, Larson said.

The problem is that the Job Center keeps pushing people to go to BTC, when you are really allowed to go to any WI school under the programs they offer (in some cases including online courses). As a result, there is going to be a overkill of graduates in the programs they offer, which isn't going to help anyone get a job because there will be hundreds of people applying for the same jobs. Other than the high end medical related jobs, there isn't much out there. The city would be well served to research the graduation trends at BTC and then use that as a selling point for new businesses. For example, "hey we're going to have 300 IT network specialist graduating over the next three years open up your tech firm here."

Opinion80- yeah pretty sad when they won't even hire graduates from their own school after graduation. I know they've hired some, for those who are going to go off on me. But I know a lot of good people that were graduates of BTC and were not hired. Not because they weren't qualified. They were. After all, doesn't BTC guarantee their education?

King Larson will probably have to interview all of the potential candidates himself too since many of the instructors won't serve on hiring committees for BTC anymore. Kind of puts a sour taste in your mouth when you put in all the time to interview people, narrow down the field, make your suggestions as to whom should be hired and then have King Larson and his puppet in HR just hire whomever they wish to anyway.

I think they don't commit to the full time permanent jobs because they don't know how long this increased enrollment will last.

I think the medical field is what needs more instructors not office technology. There aren't any office jobs out there and if there are there are already hundreds of unemployed applying and getting those jobs. I have 2 wonderful degrees from BTC and neither of them has gotten me a job.

I'm not an instructor, nor have I played on on TV, but I would welcome the chance to mold innocent minds into my own likeness.
