Mayor proposes new policy for holiday displays

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Green Bay's mayor has proposed a new policy for holiday displays on city property a week after a federal lawsuit over a nativity scene at City Hall was dismissed.

Mayor Jim Schmitt says Santa, reindeer and other non-religious displays would be allowed, but Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus and other religious scenes should be reserved for private property.

The proposal is expected to go to a City Council committee next week.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation filed a federal lawsuit over last year's nativity scene at City Hall. A federal judge dismissed that lawsuit last week because the nativity display had been taken down. The judge didn't rule on the merits of the case.

Nemesis,
I find it ironic that you claim that everyone who belongs to FFRF is bigoted and hates Christians. Your statement, is in itself bigoted. You assume that all members of FFRF are bigots and hate an entire religious groups. I know Christians and even one Jewish person who belong/donate to FFRF because they support the idea of Separation of Church and State(I happen not to belong to the group but know some members). Hardly Christian-haters. Your post begins with your statement that you are "fed up" and "can't stand" anyone who happens to disagree with you. That doesn't seem like a hate-free stance. Some people interpret the First Amendment and the writings of the Founders to mean that we should have a strong separation, hopefully even those that disagree with you show more respect than you show them.

Not saying we should be putting nativity scenes on city property since of course there is a separation of church and state...however, maybe this country needs to think about the reason for Christmas (heck, read the first 6 letters in the word!) Honestly, with the way the world is going right now....maybe God is trying to tell us something. Just some food for thought.
And speaking of people having issues with other religions and customs- these religious fanatics and whomever else are trying to ruin the idea of Halloween for elementary students. They can't just have fun anymore and play with the idea of ghosts, goblins, and witches. Please, I don't think we are going to be doing any spells and turning them to a pagan religion. And also think- "back in the day," did the minority religious (or whatever) groups cause an uproar and force people to change things to accommodate their beliefs or did they just go with the flow or do something different for that day?

I get really fed up with the Gaylorite groups. And I can't stand even more the people in authority who believe she is right because they have maybe a two second attention span to learn the truth of the issue she is raising. First off it is not un-constitutional - I dare anyone to show me the words in the first amendment that say "separation of church and state". Secondly, years ago the supreme court affirmed in a decision that atheism IS a religion. All these lower court decisions to deny the nativity or other public expressions of religion including christian religion is allowing one religion over another and thereby discriminatory against the christian religion. So all the Gaylorites and groups like them are basically hatefilled & bigotted against christians.
It seems we don't stand for that kind of bigotry and hate anywhere else in society except when dealing with christians.

Actually, I believe it is based on a Celtic "pagan" festival combined with aspects of All Saints Day (to varying degrees depending on culture/religion/region), a "Christian" holiday. I believe the FFRF was concerned about a nativity scene which was overtly Christian as opposed to secular(ish) symbols like Rudolph or Santa. If Halloween were a Wiccan holiday and cities were putting up pentagrams, triquetras, and triple goddess symbols, you might have a point.

Perhaps we should also remove all Halloween images, as it is a Wiccan holiday.

Oh- yes - Christmas is a FEDERAL holiday, not just a religious one. So our government has declared it a holiday, but they are forbidden from putting up a display recognizing it? Something is very wrong here.

I have nothing against anybody's religion as long as you keep it out of our government. We can ALL worship as we please in our own homes, our parochial schools and our religious establishments. That should be plenty. It seems to me that Christmas began it's trajectory to a cheap and commercialized entity when it began to leave those 3 institutions. Take it back where it belongs and return it to the sacred day you claim it to be.

gmretirednow,
"In God We Trust" was put on our money due to actions of idiots like Joseph McCarthy. in the 190s. Non-Christians, agnostics, and atheists do not "trust in God" which causes some to find "In God WE Trust" a unnecessary, untrue, and divisive.

I'm a Christian, and I believe that religion is a private matter. Placing a religious display on public property is tacky and petty. What, do you think you'll fade away if you don't get City Hall to help people remember to go to church? Is your faith that weak?
.
It's only barely acceptable that the city has added symbols of other religions, but there are more religions than they have symbols for, even in Green Bay.

Yes, the government is condoning and endorsing FFRF's interpretation of the U.S. Constitution and laws. It is not condoning/endorsing the groups views regarding religion. That would be quite difficult as the group is made up largely (but not solely) of atheists and agnostics who, by definition, have different religious beliefs. FFRF is not asking for an anti-Christian or anti-religion display, they are simply asking that no pro- or anti- religious displays of any type are not put up on public property or with public money.
This is a Constitutional issue, not a religious one.

I'm really getting fed up with this group. I'm a Christian, but other than this post, I don't go around announcing that fact and looking for non-Christian things I don't believe in. By removing a Nativity scene from public property, aren't they in fact condoning and supporting the Freedom from Religion's views?

Why does this group continue to get coverage. Why is everything to do with Christianity not acceptable and we can stomp all over Christians but boy we better be tolerant of every other religion or lack of religion.

Is showing a nativity scene really that offensive? Symbols of other religions certainly are not attacked in the same way.

Maybe if you really looked at what it represents you would find that it is a message of peace and understanding, not intolerance like these types of groups try to paint them as
