Doyle outlines options for GM workers

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle says state and regional services are available for General Motors plant workers in Janesville.

GM announced Monday it will end sport utility production at the plant on Dec. 23, leaving about 1,200 people out of work. The plant is set to close completely by spring.

Doyle says the state Department of Workforce Development and its regional counterpart, the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, formed an assistance team in April, when GM announced it would do away with the plant's second shift. The team is working to arrange sessions to help plant workers learn about unemployment benefits and training opportunities.

Doyle also says workers should contact the Rock County Job Center at 608-741-3400 to learn more about services.

unknown - GM did not ruin your family. I hope you don't blast that negative crap around your family. It is always somebody else's fault.

Make yourself so that you are in demand, and control your own destiny. Don't blame others for your recent downturn. It is part of life.

unknown, Lear and LSI (and United Industries) employees *are included*, although the Gazette did not mention them. Read the Doyle press release I linked to below.

Katesmom sorry but under Obama Janesville will never recover like Beloit did with small business man Ken Hendricks. Under Obama small business owners will be taxed very heavy. Example is in a report from Ohio over the weekend where at a meet/greet line a Plumber/Owner operator asked Obama why Obama wanted to raise the plumber's taxes. Obama replied I want to spread the wealth. Which means take from the hard working, and give to the unwilling to work.

Wow - I should have explained in more detail, but I was short on time when I wrote it. What I meant about the article being written about 1200 people at GM, and not your little company was; GM currently employes 1200 people. At 4 per household, that article could be of use to around 4800 people, not including surrounding companies supporting them.

If you are working for a company of 15, your companies news is not as important to circulation as 1200 would be. The story is meant to impact as many people as possible, and the numbers support it.

It was not a slam against the small companies.

compare what is happening in Wisconsin with what is happending in our southern states which have right to work laws which protect workers from Union bully tactics. The fact is companies are scared to death of unions like 95. New jobs. Good jobs with high pay and benefits are growing at a very high rate in Alabama and Texas. Until we change these right to work laws Wisconsisn will contiinue seeing its empoyeers leaving the area just like our neighbor state of Michigan..

Don't worry about Doyle. After Obama wins, he will be going to Washington. He can't do any harm there, right?

Actually most of these comments are a little hateful. So what if they made good wages. And ill shop at walmart as the prices are fair and much cheaper then the mall stores for same merchandise. And i know the labels in clothing at most local stores are other than Made in USA. We have a serious problem in our town we are losing 3 major factories and some other ones due to GM closing Instead of whining and complaining come together as a caring community and have compassion for the people who after the end of the year will be without work. Like it or not those high paid workers have done alot for this community with charities and food drives. Who is going to put up over 300 meals for families this Christmas and find the donations for toys for kids at ECHO. Quit the negative and find the positive in this situation. Love your neighbors and reach out and show them this town is one to be Proud of..........

Again and Again, how many times are we going to elect this moron for Governor?? He has done nothing for Wisconsin but make it worse. I hope all that work at GM that voted for Doyle thank him for helping them out by giving them all a phone number....

Well spark, I did read the other posts. And I have read many posts before this that blatantly used lies and innuendos to insult other good, hard working people just because they work at GM. Nobody should be insulted for putting food on the table, small businesses or GM workers, I would hope you would agree with that. It's just the lack of humanity on these message boards that gets a little tiresome, but that is what anonymity allows on these things.

I think everyone is a bit stressed out over this issue and snapping at each other. I generally skip the GM threads because that's what they fill up with.
.
The full announcement from the Governor's office mentions Lear and LSI as well as United Industries in Beloit. Doyle also credited the state's congressional delegation with helping secure the grant money.
http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/journal_me...
.
As I've noted in the past, this money will be made available to these groups. This FREES UP other money budgeted for the area so that other workers will be able to take advantage of the DWD service range. It effectively expands the pool of money available to all workers here and keeps them from having to compete directly with GM/etc. workers for assistance funds.

Almost ONE THIRD of all the employees that will be laid off, 500 total from Lear and LSI, are not mentioned. I wonder if they get the same assistance?

Vader- why don't you read some of the posts below and then realize why people are getting pissed about the GM issue. It's comments about other businesses and the lack of respect for other places besides GM that is causing people to react this way.

redder - how do you know we never put food in your kid's mouth? Maybe I and others bought a product or paid for a service for the place you work. Maybe the taxes I pay help to educate your children too.
I wish all the self cenetered GM haters would just get a life, as their whiny attacks on good people who have fallen on hard times is more than pathetic.
And just for the record, I would rather be working for my money than just getting paid at home. That is the values my parents gave me. But with the job outlook in Janesville so far I am glad that the union has negotiated this for us. And I do feel for Lear and LSI workers and hopefully things will work out for them.

Maybe Janesville can learn something from Beloit for once. Remember we lost the Beloit Corporation and proved that there is life after your towns main plant shuts down! Just look at us now we continue to grow and flourish

you people are ridiculous. GM is gone oh well, it certainly wont shut any retail down thats for sure. Thats right what about Parker pens people did you all shed one of your fake GM tears then, or what about the local dealers who struggled through hard times and got screwed by GM and its over paid FACTORY work. I get very upset at the thought of arogant GMers who think they have that might. YOU DONT AND THE MORE YOU CRY THE LESS SUPPORT YOU WILL GET. Grow up and get a job like the rest of us. 60000 people in Janesville 1200 GMers sounds like the majority is not with you, I am sorry for your loss but you never put food in my kids mouths.

Hey localboy, you're going to find out just how important these "little" businesses are pretty quick. Unless everyone keeps shopping at Wal-Mart and then all the so called "little businesses" will be gone too.
It's no longer about GM folks. Get it in your thick skulls.

Oh and thanks for all your help Govenor Doyle. Nobody would have known to contact job service. Another guy I wish would go away.

First, there is no reason for name calling. You are in the same situation as the rest, but is it the worker's fault that GM employee's are receiving assistance and other companies are not? NO! So the name call and bashing online should stop.
I thought we were supposed to be a community. I have yet to see this "community" come together for anything. Did we come together when Parker Pen shut down? This is one of the worst towns as far as support goes.
I used to be proud to say i was from Janesville, but each day I believe that less and less.

It effects over 1,200 employees. They need to write about it because it is more important then the little business you work for.
