Milton School Board puts new high school plans on hold

The Milton School Board wants to wait and see what happens in the next year before deciding when to hold a referendum asking for a new high school.

The board met Monday to discuss its options, almost three months after a design committee presented plans for a $69.4 million school. The plan also calls for $7.3 million to convert the existing high school into a middle school.

Most board members agreed the economy was too uncertain--nationally and locally--to push for a referendum in the coming year.

The school lost seven students this year, the first year in seven or eight that it didn't gain students, board members said. In the last three years, it gained about 100 students a year.

While the board waits to launch a referendum, it can make other decisions about the new school, such as how much green technology it will have, President Rob Roy said.

Rocky, At that rate, It will never be built. Even at the price now it's a tough one for the taxpayers to swallow.

Go ahead and build the school while the fed is still buying up junk bonds.

Ernie, there's a difference between a referendum approved by the voters and a discussion of a future expansion which hasn't even gone to referendum yet. The bonds were already issued, funding the projects, last year.

Well, Not to be critical but the Janeville School District would never put any remodeling or new additions on hold because of one family whos name, Influence and cloat is on the school board and on the construction company. I for one voted against that referendum. And now that we are in a horrible economic crisis and I'm suppose be happy that my property taxes went up to pay for all that? I think not!
