Three days after announcing the definitive closure of an Ohio sport utility vehicle plant, General Motors said today its Janesville plant will build trucks through most of November.

In a mid-morning memo to Janesville employees, GM said it is reinstating production of full-size SUVs for the week of Nov. 3.

The plant’s 1,150 hourly and 130 salaried employees will also be on the job for the weeks of Nov. 10 and 17.

In the weeks leading up to today’s scheduling announcement, speculation had been that the Janesville plant was not likely to build trucks in November and December.

For more details, check out the full story or pick up a copy of today's Janesville Gazette.

Most business owners vote Republican? You don't understand your own statement? Who gives people jobs? If you support the business owner, they hire the people. If you support the working man, how do you get jobs out of that? Is your working brother going to give you money when his business owner closes up? Don't penalize the productive people by spreading their income to the people who are not productive. Give the money to the business owner who will expand and give you a job. And finally, quit buying that cheap foreign crap they are peddling out there, and save your money to buy something local even if it is more expensive.

This whole topic goes back to the point of the state of our economy and why we are here??? The republicans have done NOTHING for us, and it is a known fact that Democrats are nine times out of ten for the working person. Look at most business owners, they usually vote republican. We need someone to see the state we are in and try to help the people that make this world go round!!!! And several of them are the union brothers and sisters in the auto industry. I can only hope some light will be shed here, so the younger generation has some sort of chance for a decent future. But I also believe, BE AMERICAN... BUY AMERICAN!!!

There you go again. The outsiders always seem to know more about things that they aren't involved in. I sure wish I had that kind of intuition.

woodsman -Today about 67 percent of Japanese brand vehicles sold in America are produced in North America, mostly in the United States and largely with U.S. produced parts.

The Japanese transplant vehicles are high quality, as are most Big 2.8 vehicles. The quality gap between transplant and domestic manufacturers is very small, but it is taking just as long for the Big 2.8 to shed their poor quality image as it did to create it. Face it, domestic vehicles in the 70's and 80's were crap. The Germans currently build the least reliable vehicles.

clouds555, Mercedes actually has some of the worst quality in recent years, and their cars are hardly affordable.

Localboy: While our union encourages us to vote democratic by examining the candidates voting records, the union has never told me who to vote for. Most of us are educated enough to figure that out for ourselves. By the way, who tells you who to vote for?

There are many problems with the auto industry. I would start with government regulation, adversarial relationship between labor and management, poor promotion of products, and poor image among consumers. These are only a few, but the problem is very complex.

I need to ask you die hard Democrats a question.

How is the Askew/Yasukawa agreement created by the Carter administration, working out? How is the NAFTA agreement signed in by Clinton working out?

For all of you Union people losing your jobs, just remember who your local is pressing you to vote for - a Democrat.

MOC0428 -
Bob Lutz is not part of the problem. He is probably best definition of a car guy in the industry. He has championed the Volt, Cruze, mini car triplets, etc. He may be behind some of the muscle Detroit is putting out (ie: Corvette ZR1, Camaro, first generation Viper, etc), but that is because some people want a choice on what kind of car they own. That particular car matches that persons personality. That is why they buy it and that is what made the auto industry great. It is one of the only industries where you can show others your personality and your tastes by the kind of car you own, how you take car of it, etc. Not everyone wants to drive around in some bland econobox commodity car. Asian and European brands offer the same types (Acura NSX, Mercedes SLR Mclaren).

Let's see, would I stand a better chance of selling this collection of loose truck parts or, should I put them together and try to sell a WHOLE truck?
Seem pretty obvious to me.
Maybe GM's smarter than most of you?

woodsman - give us a break. Toyota and Honda have probably created more jobs in the US than GM in the last decade or two. There is no such thing as an "American" or "Foreign" made care anymore. Just face the fact; manufacturing as we knew it is leaving the US and it's not coming back. It's the price of progress. Same thing happened in Europe; we're just catching up. For good or bad. Just be realistic about it.

If any of you think that these car manufactures don't have the capabilities to create trucks, suv's any type of vehicle with double the gas mileage, you're ignorant. I guarantee you they have it with todays technology. It's all about the gas/oil companies.

You have a better chance to servive in a bigger car MOCO: The Monte Carlo is bigger, much more room then the JAP. cars, plus your so called better gas mileage cars, only in YOUR mind. The Monte gets 30 plus on the hwy.,and a much better ride, then those Puddle jumpers. You people that drive those foreign cars,"ARE" traders to your country,You are part of the problem we have here. The military fights for your freedom, and in return you people that buy this jap. junk, are supporting their countries,"AND" sending america's monies to other countries & JOBS!!! I WOULD rather walk, then drive one of those pieces of junk!!

"Nothing said about GM in this blog qualifies for having the comments removed" Been_there_done_that - From the very beginning when the Gazette put the comment sections on the webpages, they said clearly that this was their website, and they can do whatever they want. They don't need a reason to disable a comment. Unfortunately, that makes for unfair, and biased reporting. It shows me the Gazette would rather rig the game, rather than believe in free enterprise, and the democratic system. That's a shame in a one newspaper town. Fortunately, we have the Internet today, and we can get our news from many, many resources now. I find the comment sections amusing, and try to stir up a little amusement on my own.

Can anyone provide numbers on how many days of inventory are currently on hand for Janesville's products? I'm surprised the Gazette didn't include this info to indicate if the additional weeks of production are based on supply and demand.

Did any of you watch 60 minutes last night. That man is a part of the problem, no wonder GM is struggling. It is amazing the amount of arrogance a companys still has when they are close to collapsing because of poor/stupid business decisions.

Danias- Spark was probably talking about GM as a whole not the Janesville plant, lighten up!

greengina8- The Volt is going to cost ~ 40K to own. It may help the environment but the cost will not offset the gas savings. At that cost I would guess a person would have to own that car for 10 years to get above what it would have cost to buy a much better Honda or Toyota.

Sorry GM, you didn't stand by your product which cost me thousands. I will never buy another.

What? Why SUVs? I was under the impression it was time for a change in fuel options. Silly me for thinking again. And by the way, the Volt is a joke compared to the electric car of the 1990's.

danias - I agree with Spark. When the gazette removes comments sections it's usually because a person or persons have been verbally attacked or the "user policy agreement" has been violated. Nothing said about GM in this blog qualifies for having the comments removed. It is true...GM changes their mind A LOT. Nothing derogatory or offensive about commenting on that.

How is this being rude? It's the facts and nothing rude was said. The truth is, they have no clue what they're doing. The story changes daily.
How does this make me a rude member of Janesville? Lived here my whole life and know many people that worked at GM. Part of the problem is Janesville depended on GM forever and now there's going to be problems. There's a lot of other large companies in this town that don't get the same treatment or coverage.

I wonder how GM will run when a lot of the management workforce last day will be October 31st. When your HR rep is basically telling everyone to go out and find other jobs...Hmm...GM is losing a lot of good workers in Janesville since there has been no guarantee from management about their career/transfer! It totally sucks!
