MEQUON, Wis. (AP) A bald eagle that was part of the first pair to nest in the Milwaukee area in more than a century has been found dead.

Officials say the eagle was discovered Sunday afternoon in Mequon, less than 20 feet from its nest on the Lake Michigan shore.

Department of Natural Resources regional ecologist Owen Boyle says the bird was found on land belonging to the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust with no signs of a gunshot or trauma.

He says the eagle will be taken to a Madison laboratory to determine what killed it.

Boyle says neighbors reported seeing the eagles flying together late last week. He says it's not known yet whether the male or female died.

The pair produced a single eaglet last year and this year.

The Bald Eagle is in fact an excellent example of how conservation and endangered species laws can bring a species back from the brink. Even without hunting and vandalism, of course, animals will fall prey to illness and predators. We should take this as instructive for future conservation efforts. Extinction is not inevitable.

How sad for Mequon and the rest of us. I have been following stories about the eagles there since they were first spotted.

I once stopped a soccer game I was refereeing so that the kids could see the Bald Eagle that was circling over the Craig field. They were impressed.

Enjoy them while we have them. Too many people don't seem to care that 1/4 of the species on this planet are going extinct. I know they just say "well, it's evolution" but we all know it's more than that.

Anyone else think it's time for God to send down another flood?

The first time I seen a bald eagle in the wild I was about ten or so. We were on a boat on Cheteck Lake up by Eau Claire. He dove down and picked a fish outta the water. It was amazing! I still see him everytime I go up there. He/she has a nest on one of the island trees. They are so amazing and beautiful.

If you want to see an Eagle up close take a canoe ride down the sugar river from Albany dam to Sweetminihaha campground. They have a nest have way between the two, with the leaf's falling it's not hard to spot.

Yes! I've seen that bald eagle flying near the airport and on Hwy 51 near the Marine Corps League--as well as above Dawson Fields most recently. I always feel an incredible sense of hope when I see bald eagles soaring, and it's sad to hear of this death in the news.
