Wisconsin considers expanding herbicide ban

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Some southern Wisconsin farmers may have to find news ways to control weeds in their corn fields as the state seeks to extend a ban on a common herbicide.

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has proposed adding about 1,830 acres in Columbia County to the area where atrazine is banned.

Atrazine is banned in parts of Rock County, said Randy Thompson, Extension Dairy and Livestock agent.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says high levels of the chemical can produce health problems including heart, lung and kidney congestion and long-term exposure can lead to cancer. DATCP says tests on drinking water wells indicated continued use of atrazine would add to groundwater contamination.

Farmers and others can comment on the proposal at a public hearing Oct. 23 in Poynette or by mail until Nov. 7.

greengina8 I agree. You said "I fear these environmental issues take a back seat when banks and businesses across America are in such deep financial trouble, among other things." I had hopes of seeing MORE numbers of intelligent posts on this article, but the environment is taking a back seat to all the nonsense blogs. Come on people... wake up! Did you ever really "think" you would pay $1.50+ to buy a "bottle" of WATER 10 years ago?! And now those bottles are also clogging up our landfills, not decomposing, and creating yet another reason not to drink the water!! So Far... we've got three good posts here. Let's get some more! I know there are more opinions out there on this issue and I'd like to see them.

I am all for protection of ground and surface water resources, and we need to change policy. I fear these environmental issues take a back seat when banks and businesses across America are in such deep financial trouble, among other things. The economy cannot exist independent of the environment. I'm sure because I have well water I have been exposed to this compound. Not only do we need atrazine bans, we need better, MANDATORY nutrient management programs for the entire county, and total phosphorus bans for the entire county. The intelligence and technology exists; let's use it. "Be the change you wish to see in the world." ~Ghandi

Your absolutely right JD. Anything water soluble sprayed on the ground is going to be in our water, it's just a matter of time. In many places, the time has already come.

Pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, and heavy metals all going into our drinking water. Run-off from super farms has already polluted uncounted areas to make water unsafe for human consumption.

Every time I see some idiot chasing dandelions in their yard with a sprayer I am afraid for my children. If our entire food chain and water table is toxic, where will we find safe food and water?

Think of the shelves upon shelves of toxins available to ANYONE at the hardware store, no permit required. Consider all the lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, etc...leaching out of the landfills into the water table.

How many people bother to recycle those really nasty nickel cadmium and lithium ion batteries from their cell phones, cameras, cordless phones, MP3 players, or properly recycle that old clock radio or TV they just hauled to the curb?

I enjoy technology as much as the next person, but without personal accountability for EVERY person using it, we are all doomed to living in a toxic waste dump.

If the EPA is admitting the health problems associated with atrazine, you can bet its 100 times worse than that... folks we have to wake up to the fact that we are poisoning ourselves with pesticides, herbicides, and literally thousands of toxins every day. It is not a coincidence that there are so many chronic health problems today that weren't as common 50 years ago. Asthma, MS, lupus, autism..... Take care of yourself, detoxify as much as possible, eat organic when you can, and get healthy!
