Wis. pantries call for emergency shipments of food

By Associated Press   October 3, 2008 - 9:17 a.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) Milwaukee area food banks are calling for more emergency shipments of food as demand grows.

The executive director of the Hunger Task Force in Milwaukee says it had five emergency food orders last month, which is rare and significant.

Sherri Tussler says emergency shipments went to food pantries in Milwaukee and the suburbs of South Milwaukee, West Allis and Waukesha.

She says South Milwaukee has seen a 50 percent increase in demand for food, and growing poverty is evident in West Allis.

The executive director of the Food Pantry of Waukesha County says it remains one of the state's wealthiest counties but poverty is growing there as well. Karen Tredwell says her pantry served 2,152 families last month, the second-largest number in its 30-year history.

Yummmm.... Creamy government cheese spread on buttered bread, and grilled...
There's over a dozen people at the GIFTS homeless shelter now, and House of Mercy still has a waiting list. I you still have a job, please give to those less fortunate.

miltongirl, in the 1980s there was a dairy support program that gave out free cheese to needy families. The farmers were paid by the federal government. The program originally existed because dairy prices had fallen and dairy farmers were struggling. Today, though, milk and dairy prices are (or have been) near all-time highs.

the demand for food pantry stocks has increased nation wide... Milwaukee, being our state's largest city, is the best comparative example for us to see... this only further gives the idea as to how bad things have gotten thus far, and there's no sign of things getting any better anytime soon...
