UW System looks for cuts
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin System will cut employee travel and look for other ways to save money, including possibly consolidating and eliminating unpopular academic programs, President Kevin Reilly said Wednesday.
Reilly said he’s ordered chancellors who lead the state’s 13 four-year universities and 13 two-year colleges to approve all out-of-state travel funded by tuition and tax money. Only essential trips should be approved and they should look closely at reining in trips involving multiple employees, he said.
In addition, Reilly said he’s asked campus provosts to review academic programs that have low enrollments and graduation rates, and consider how they might be realigned to save money.
On Wednesday, Reilly warned the system of 160,000 students faces "an uncertain future" given the state’s projected $5.4 billion budget deficit through mid-2011.
"The state has never needed its public university more, and it has never been more challenged to sustain its support for this vital enterprise," he said in a statement.

The UW System has been used to balance the budget for the last 5 years. It is so sad that at no point do people make the argument that it's becoming too much. The entire welfare, economic and otherwise, of the state depends on the Universities, but unfortunately, the administration will make vociferous arguments in favor of raises for the Chancellors and President of the System, but they won't make the argument about the needs of the universities as a whole. Cut administration, if you wish, but don't cut the classes, the professors, and the programs that make the universities a service to the state.

I agree with phylibj, transfer students are always given a priority on my campus. You can find out before you take any classes what will transfer where. A lot if it is because of the different majors and curriculum that are offered at certain campuses. Besides this article is about cutting the budget not credit transfers. No one that works with me is getting rich either. Any UW System employees annual income is available by accessing the Wisconsin Redbook if you are that interested.

I’m so glad that I’ve decided to transfer out of the UW-system. I’ve had nothing but problems going there. My biggest gripe about ever going there is the credits. Just because it’s the same system doesn’t mean that the credits transfer the same to all the campuses. I’m just 15 credits shy of graduating in the spring but as I was looking at what 4 year campus to transfer to I found out that the majority of my credits would only be electives and once I got to the 4 year campus (if I even got in, transfer students are given no extra consideration) it would be like starting over like a freshman again.

To tugger: I am a UW employee, and I make just like a state worker does in the same position. We are all governed by the same state pay-rates and increases. If you are refering to the UW professors, they are paid according to area of education and the demand for teachers. Professors in the Business college make more than some other areas because that is the high demand area. Enrollments have increased recently due to higher need for higher education. If you would like to spend years in Undergrad, Graduate, and Doctoral schools, you too can make what they make.

I wonder if cutting travel expenses applies to the athletic department as well. The mens BB team just got back from a "trip" to the Virgin Islands.

It is about time the UW trim some of it's fat. UW employees make a lot more than the average State employee. Did you know there was a difference? OH yes! UW and state employees should be equal.
