CWD found in hunting preserve

MADISON — Dozens of white-tailed deer on a hunting preserve in Portage County have been killed after one of them tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said Tuesday that a 7-year-old doe shot in September at Alligator Creek Whitetails near Junction City had the fatal brain disease. State rules require that farm-raised deer be tested for CWD when killed.

Officials negotiated with the herd owner on the destruction of the herd, and 64 deer were shot from Nov. 12 to Nov. 18. Tissue samples were taken for CWD testing.

The property is being monitored to make sure no deer remain. The site must be kept fenced for five years to keep wild deer out, with no stocking of deer or elk.

The deer that tested positive was raised on the site and had no ties to any other deer farm.

Officials said the preserve was placed under quarantine when the positive test result was reported Oct. 9, preventing any live deer from being moved on or off the property.

The owner is to receive payments for a portion of the herd’s appraised value.

There had not been a CWD-infected herd found in Wisconsin since January 2005.

The DNR has really KILLED hunting in Southern Wisconsin! All you have to do is ask any hunter in this area how many deer they have seen. Save the State Budget... GET RID OF THE DNR CWD SECTION!!!!

nascar8808fan - Couldn't agree more and I think any avid hunter would also agree with you.

The whole CWD thing pisses me off. CWD I'm sure has been around for as long as the deer have been around. Thay just discovered it one day and decided they wanted to kill all the deer in the state. Tell me the insurance companyies havent had there hand in it! I just wanted to see if anyone agrees with me on this.- When I started hunting at the age of 13 I am now 34 I remember sitting in the woods and allways seeing deer. That kept you interested. Now In my opinion you are lucky to see a deer while out hunting. I have a 10 year old son that can't wait to take his hunter safty course so he can go deer hunting. I think because of this whole CWD thing there is going to be fewer and fewer deer witch in turn will not hold the interest in many young hunters. Therefore they will no longer like the sport and turn to something else. Where is this going to stop? Are they (DNR) going to start testeng all the game untill theres nothing left?? Give me a break!! Let it be for the sake of our future sportsman.

Trust me and other hunters. The whole CWD theory and problem has done nothing but cause problems and issues with everyone that hunts. CWD has been around for a long, long time. I don't agree with any of it, like most people don't. But, I don't make the rules, I have to simply follow them. The only reason I made the comment I did, is because Woodsman tends to throw out comments that don't even relate to the story. Like Bush.

I kinda agree with woodsman... the CWD has been (and most likely) been around for more years than you can imagine.. what we thought were Deer "Frolicking" around in our yards and fields, could have been "CWD"..
now Some hair brained scientist (who probably missed his first 18 deer while hunting-because he could not hit the "Broad side of a Barn" or he had his pristine yard tore up a little by some deer) decided to say "HEY, lets screw it up for all the Hunters since I can't get one to mount on my wall, why should everyone else! ! !"..
Has the consumption of venison meat proven to be harmful to people?? ..I haven't heard any one "Dying" from it..
it just a way for the Gov't (yes the DNR is gov't).. to end What has been a staple for most people to have fun (or eat) during the winter... you don't see them testing BEAR do you???
HAPPY HUNTING (thanks to the Wis DNR)

Woodsman - if you would educate yourself on the matter of CWD, you would understand that farm raised deer and groups of deer in one concentrated area, are part of the CWD problem and how it spreads. Deer have been removed from deer farms because of this over the last 5 years. Bush didn't have anything to do with the Wisconsin CWD problem. I know you'd like to believe that.

Woodsman, what in the world does Bush have to do with this? You are sounding more senile every day.

It says no deer or elk for 5 years. I understand that is a hardship but I don't understand why the DNR is at fault. No matter what the DNR does about CWD you guys scream. I suppose he could raise wild turkeys or something similar. He could raise horses or have paintball fights just no deer or elk.

So this man has no income coming for five years on his land,so what is his land? like hallow ground now,is the devil coming alive? and who sets the five year ban? and where do they come up with this expertly knowing five years the ground is safe? DNR hard at work again, maybe DNR spelled backwards spells BUSH hard at work to put you out of work!!
