From the WCLO newsroom:

A two car collision Sunday afternoon results in critical injuries to one of the drivers.

Janesville police responded to the accident around 5:30 at the intersection of Center and Walcott.

Reports indicate a car driven by 18-year-old Nickolas Belfield pulled into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle. Belfield's vehicle was flipped onto its roof and he was trapped in the wreckage.

Paramedics transported him to Mercy Hospital where police say he is listed in critical condition. No tickets have been issued pending completion of the investigation.

believe it or not kids these days do actually have to go through more extensive training than some would think. Several months of classroom training, several more months of behind the wheel training, a test to pass before even getting their temps.,having to hold their temps. for 6 more months, and then having to pass another test to get their drivers licenses. Im unsure what training kids had to go through back in the day but im pretty sure enough training isnt the blame of an ACCIDENT. Honestly i think that everyone that drives has had a bad judgement while driving. You almost wouldnt be human if you didnt. People of all ages drive "crazy" or inatentivly. For example when I was 4 months pregnant with my twins I was at a stop turning into a gas sation waiting for traffic in oncomming lanes to pass and a 93 year old lady smashed the back of my car in. Now if I were to target bad drivers it would be the older ones with slower reaction time but i understand that everyone has a bad day once in a while. Please look at all aspects of a problem before you start bashing anyone. Just remember ACCIDENTS happen. May my prayers be with this young boy and his family.

gmaof3 you are very judgemental and don't know the facts. Nick may have been at fault or not. The point is all the facts aren't listed. He wasn't speeding or driving recklace. He was however trying to cross the 4 lanes of Center Ave. Another one of Janesville's major speed lanes.

Slow down people. And do not trust the other driver. Leave a little earlier for work, school etc... Bridges are always icy...jmo

I am a young driver and was in a VERY severe accident when I was 18...the cause a 59 year old woman. She was cited and ticketed not me. This situation is severly unfortuante but do not blame this poor boy; he is going through more than enough grief right now. Focus your attention on keeping him in you prayers not ripping apart young drivers; this could have happened to anyone.

gmaof3, please do not blame this on young drivers. I also drive the interstate every day, and have for 18 years. It is NOT kids that are driving this way. Alot of the risky drivers are those who are well over the age of 25, and most are driving nice new cars. This is a horrible accident, and if you remember back when you were young, those horrible accidents happened back then too. It only takes a second to make a mistake that effects the rest of your life.

Good luck to this boy and his family!

Ok... once again, a young person makes a huge mistake and ends up injured... I just truly do not think enough training is applied to these kids. I drive the interstate everyday and the abuses behind the wheel are frightening!

I've been tailgated so many times. Weekly, I swear, they're catching a buzz off my fumes! If they got any closer, they cou;d read my dash board GPS unit!!!

From weaving in and out of traffic, to passing on the right, to cutting people off, most of these people look under 25. Many of them are driving older model cars, with bald tires. They'll fishtail and hydroplane trying to get around me!

I don't drive below the speed limit, unless the weather is dicey. I consider myself a defensive driver. On average, I set my cruise on 72 MPH and traffic still passes me like I'm "up on blocks".

Stupidity behind the wheel is evident. These kids have that false sense of indestructibility. My daughters lost a very close friend a few years ago. She pulled out in front of a "crotch rocket" that was going WAY too fast for the area! This lady had a young child...

Back to this young man... he had to be impudent to have flipped over in this neighborhood. Hopefully he'll live and will have an impact on friends and family about the dangers of reckless driving.

My prayers are with his parents. Its always been my biggest fear, to get "that call".

I hope all goes well with you. I know some great nurses and doctors at Mercy Hospital.
