MADISON, Wis. (AP) Cold air and a lack of tracking snow greeted many Wisconsin hunters on the opening day of this year's regular nine-day deer hunting season.

But despite that, the state Department of Natural Resources reported hunting conditions were nearly ideal Saturday.

People working at many places that register deer for the DNR reported daytime activity was slower than normal, likely because the cold weather would preserve the meat.

Deer could be left hanging at deer camps, allowing hunters to stay in the field.

The DNR estimates up to 1.7 million deer roam the fields and woods, about the same as a year ago.

My fiancee and his family got four yesterday. Two little bucks and two does! They are out today too but so far no luck! Good luck to all hunters and be safe!
