Appleton man killed while hunting
BOVINA — A 48-year-old man from Appleton was fatally shot Sunday while hunting near the town of Bovina.
The Outagamie County Sheriff’s office said in a news release that the incident happened at about 10:40 a.m. No other details were immediately available. The man’s name had not been released.
In a separate incident Sunday, a 24-year-old man from Caroline was shot in the shoulder when a deer ran between him and a member of his hunting party. Fred Grunewald was expected to survive the incident, which happened in Grant Township in Shawano County.
A spokeswoman for the state Department of Natural Resources said that Saturday, the opening day of the firearms deer season, was incident-free.

It is amazing how safe the hunt was considering they were allowing rifles in areas that are too populated (i.e. Rock County).

It was a VERY safe opening weekend for deer hunting. According to this, "Wisconsin wildlife authorities said that five hunters were wounded and one died in shooting incidents during the first two days of the deer hunt.
That's out of 600,000 THOUSAND HUNTERS!
ONE death! FIVE incidents (not life threatening)!
Congrats hunters on your safety record.
I hope you can continue to be safe for the rest of the week.
Sincerely, a retired hunter.

morgansmom~ Rice Lake was a horrible tragedy and I am glad that people still remember. My father was friends with the man and his son that were killed. That town was the saddest town I had ever been in after it happened (rightfully so) it was all blaze orange for the hunters that died. All those hunters will be missed forever.

First of all, my sympathies go out to the family of this man, and to anyone who has lost a friend or loved one to any tragic accident. And while one death is too many, there is always a chance something might happen in the woods due to various circumstances. Sometimes it is just fate, like the person who religiously wears a seat belt and dies in an automobile accident. I am personally surprised (although pleasantly) at the usually low number of fatal occurrences during the 9-day season (Rice Lake was a horrendous exception) which goes to show that the majority of hunters are heeding the four key rules: treat every gun as if it is loaded; always keep muzzle pointed in safe direction; be aware of what is beyond your target; and keep finger off trigger until it is time to shoot.

I am a hunter myself and I must say that fellow hunters are smarter than you think. I do not drink before I am walking threw the woods with a fully loaded gun, and I promise you that there are very few that do if any. I am not saying that the man who was shot by somone in his party was not smart but was he wearing blaze orange? THATS A MUST! Also look before you shoot. Do what I do review some of the rules before you go out, trust me it helps. I'm very sorry for those families who lose/lost family members during this season!

My sympathies to the family of the deceased. Regrettably hunters shooting other hunters is all to frequent of an occurance. I don't hunt but I have no problem with those that do. I just wish some of them would do it a little more carefully.

The subject is a man died, his family is grieving and your saying that the person who shot him was drunk. Contrary to what people think not ALL HUNTERS ARE DRINKERS!!!! They may drink when they get donw hunting for the day but most hunters are a lot smarter than people think they are. Quit stereotyping!
My thoughts are with all the families involved!

I express my deepest sympathies to the family. I can't imagine what you must feel to lose a loved one in this situation.
Lulu, you need to review how you value human life. This is a horrible tragedy. Comments like yours are disrespectful.

Your clarification makes your comment no less idiotic. So by your reasoning, anyone who commits a careless act was probably drunk?

Just to add to what I said... I was not saying that the man who was shot was drunk, I was saying that the people who have shot others were probably drunk. jmo

Before anyone should be allowed to purchase a firearm or get a hunting license matter what their age hunter safety certification should be required. And yes I have mine.

Leave it to lulu to go down that road when there is absolutely no indication alcohol played a part in this incident whatsoever.
