No tow in the snow for Oshkosh area

OSHKOSH — Drivers who slide off the highways this winter could have to wait a while for a tow in the Oshkosh area.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department is banning tows from ditches and medians if they’re unsafe due to winter weather conditions.

Sheriff’s Capt. John Matz says the ban will mostly affect Highways 41 and 441/10, but could cover other roads if conditions are bad.

Matz says removing vehicles in bad weather often creates a hazard to drivers, so stuck vehicles will be left until traffic dies down.

The county will use digital billboards along U.S. Highway 41 to let drives know when the ban is in effect. Deputies will pick up drivers and take them to safe places to wait until conditions improve and their vehicles can be towed.

They do this in the Cedar Rapids IA area as I witnessed last winter. I drive in IA for my job and after one of the bigger snows last year I saw several cars in the ditches and then later found out why. I'm not convinced this is the best solution. People just need to slow down. Whether the tow truck is out in the bad weather or the next day, there is still a risk of some idiot going too fast or not paying attention and causing another wreck.

Read the article again. It says they can call the police to come get them and take them to a safe place until there car can be towed out. I for one am all for this. I have a friend who drives a tow truck. Going to pull cars out of the ditches was the worst part of his job. Ecspecially on the intersate. Some people don't slow down and others do just because they see flashing lights and wanna see what's going on. People just need to be careful, slow down and be alert. There are times you cannot avoid going in the ditch, but if everyone would just slow down then alot of accidents could be avoided.

What are these people stuck in ditches supposed to do? Call a friend? Yeah, thats the solution, more drivers out on the road. Then they end up in a ditch, or worse, in an accident. Then emergency crews get sent out in the bad weather.
Whats causing more of a hazard: One tow truck getting Joe out of a ditch, or a fire truck and 2 abmulance, police cars + multiple emergency personale outside and the "rubber neck" drivers who cant keep their eyes on the road when there are flashing lights?
.
I do not see this working at all.

Common sense would be the stuck driver not driving too fast for conditions in the first place...that'll never happen.

Sounds like common sense to me.
