Court: Sheriffs must follow union rules
MADISON, Wis. (AP) An appeals court says Wisconsin sheriffs must follow union rules when they assign deputies to transport state and federal prisoners.
The District 2 Court of Appeals says Ozaukee County Sheriff Maury Straub does not have the constitutional power to ignore a collective bargaining agreement when putting together a prisoner transportation team.
If it stands, the ruling means sheriffs must follow union rules involving seniority, hiring from within the department and posting jobs when they assemble those teams.
Straub and the county had argued the sheriff was not bound by such rules in appointing and removing deputies because he has broad constitutional power to run the jail.
