MADISON, Wis. (AP) A Middleton father accused of killing his 12-year-old son before shooting himself remains hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday.

Police have released no motive for the shooting. The two were found in a sport utility vehicle near a Madison park Tuesday.

Kyle Dutter's grandfather, Kenneth Bach of Beloit, says his grandson was an inquisitive boy who always had a big grin on his face.

Court records show the boy's father and mother divorced in 1999. Bach says Kyle lived with his father, Ryan Dutter, during the week and visited his mother in Beloit on weekends.

Ryan Dutter worked as a mortgage broker and filed for bankruptcy last fall.

You people are horrible! This story should not be available for comment.
Why hasn't the gazette written any stories about this incident so that the ignorant people on her could educate themselves on what the Dutter family is really like??? What great reporting!

I have read blogs on this site before and I have to say that I know that the Gazette and other news sources have done their best job to to make sure that the facts are covered. However, I have to say that I know this family. The deceased and the surviving mother and sister. There is a lot that just isn't covered. We don't understand why this happened. The fact is that there is more to this family than what is written in the papers. They loved this child and wanted to give him everything they could including the best education. The harsh comments are unfair, hurtful, and ignorant. This is why I feel this story shouldn't be available for comment.

The only thing that gives me peace of mind with this whole situation is that Kyle is now in heaven and does not have to live with his numerous disabilities any longer. Kyle pretty much grew up at the school I work at. It was hard to swallow the information today. People that knew the family were surprised because of how much the father loved Kyle- something definitely snapped and hopefully he did leave something behind to give sense of his reasons.

the father has now also died, the answer to the question why will probably never be answered, no one can measure the amount of stress someone else is under , or for that matter what they are thinking in their mind at any particular moment they choose to take their life and then take someone elses with them no matter who that someone is, the hard part for everyone to comprehend, from the time your little were taught what our parent s do for us is for our protection, to try and understand how someone could take that trust and hurt their child is unthinkable let alone cause their death

rick: read 'a child called 'it'' and youll see theres no rhyme or reason as to why a parent would chose to do something to one child an not the others. this is sad...

Why don't you read other stories on it and educate yourselves! The gazette has about the worst story on this. Neither of them died instantly from their wounds. None of us know what really happened in that car and from the sounds of it we will never really know...

Sorry but he just lost the right to be a father, point blank! He was a coward,he knew right where to shot and "KILL" his kid,but he was a coward to not know where to do the job right on himself. You say he was a nice guy, well you knew him when he was a nice guy,now he is a animal, get over him!!

Kyle was probably the only child living with Ryan. The oldest is in college and the younger ones probably live with their mother.
I just can't wrap my head around this...it is all so confusing.

Why would you kill one child and not the rest? (Yes, I know even one is horrible). That's the odd part. Are the rest adults now? Was this the only child left at home? IF that was the case, perhaps he felt like he needed to take the boy "with him" if he was leaving this world. The Egyptians used to do the same with people and pets.
I know I couldn't bring myself to do it, but I know if I were to die, it would be a temptation to take my pets along, because my greatest fear is who would take care of them as well as I did? Just a thought.

I am so sorry for this family's loss. I went to school with Ryan and know some of his family. He's not an animal....I don't understand this, but it's not for us to judge. I'm so sorry.

You people are so quick to judge! Let him die so he can leave all the rest of his children without a father... Not only will Kyle's siblings have to suffer the loss of their brother, but now they might lose their father too.
I know the Dutter family and I find it so hard to believe Ryan would hurt his son. He loved him and from what I witnessed he did everything he could to make sure he and all his children had the best life.
This truely is a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the Dutter family.

I don't understand how someone could kill their child! This is very upsetting. I can't imagine what this boys mother is going through right now!
