From the WCLO newsroom:

BELOIT — A five year old child is being treated for severe burns at the Burn Center in Milwaukee following a duplex fire in Beloit early Friday morning.

Beloit Fire Department Deputy Chief Bryan Northrop says they responded to 1310 Copeland Avenue on the city's east side around 12:20 Friday morning. They found smoke coming out of all sides of the house.

The occupants, a family of five in the first floor apartment and one on the second floor, were able to get out on their own.

The fire originated on the first floor, which was gutted. The second floor sustained heavy smoke damage.

The cause is under investigation but Northrop says it was probably due to a child playing with a lighter.

The Red Cross is assisting the occupants with temporary shelter.
