MILWAUKEE (AP) The number of Milwaukee children using public money to attend private schools has reached an all-time high even as public school enrollment continues to drop.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction says more than 20,000 students are now using vouchers to attend private schools.

At the same time, public school enrollment in Milwaukee has fallen below 80,000 students for the first time in a decade.

The continuing drop in enrollment has put more financial pressure on the Milwaukee Public Schools, forcing them to close some buildings and seek new ways of attracting students.

When charter schools and student transfers to suburban schools are added in, about one-third of Milwaukee students no longer attend traditional public schools.

Don't worry this program will soon be gone as our future president Obama argued against it with McCain in their last debate, so now we will see what happens with with the Vouchers that these and other kids wait for!!!!!!

The ultimate question is, do vouchers result in better education in Milwaukee? Anybody know?

"The Republicans complain about taking tax money, yet support vouchers. Duh!!"

Perhaps you can explain how taking tax money that was going to be given to a public school and instead giving it to a private school increases taxes? But I doubt it.

The program has been in place since 1989 and is the largest in the country. It probably isn't going away any time soon, though I doubt it will be expanded again. The Journal-Sentinel article discusses the political future of the program in depth.
