MADISON, Wis. (AP) — If anyone has any doubt winter is right around the corner, consider this: Snow plow appreciation day is Wednesday in Wisconsin.

Gov. Jim Doyle proclaimed Wednesday as Snowplow Driver Appreciation Day. The day is meant to remind motorists, before any measurable snow has fallen, of the important role the state’s snowplow drivers play in keeping streets safe.

Last winter was one of the snowiest ever in Wisconsin. Madison broke a record for snow with over 101 inches.

The state Department of Transportation says there are about 17,000 vehicle crashes each winter, many caused by people driving too fast for conditions.

But it would help if people got there cars off the street so it could be better. Police force: get out there and give tickets to the real violaters! Hardly anyone gets there car off the street when they are supposed to.

We have snowplows in this city?? well you couldn't tell it by my street last year or even in years where there isn't alot of snow! I can hardly get down my street. I guess they only plow main streets then. but anyway I do thank the drivers for giving up their time to do what they do. You should be paid for it!

Diplomat- Well said! Everyone has a choice to do what they want and make the right decisions. Don't expect handouts or someone to just give you something. Go earn it!

This site repeatedly makes Janesville residents sound like a bunch of whiners. Who cares if these drivers are paid well? If you are posting negatively about what other people make (snow plow drivers, GM Workers, etc.), why don't you get off your lazy butt and get a degree so you can make more money. It really isn't that hard. I am working on my masters right now while working full time.

TY spark! and yes they do deserve appreciation for the hours and hard work. Also remember main roads are a priority and our side streets will get done in time.

The amount of whiners on this site is pathetic. Can any of you be happy with anything? You want them to get out and shovel your sidewalk and take out your trash for you too? Heres a thought..try staying a little positive once and awhile.

You don't need a special day to talk like a pirate. It's fun to break out in pirate talk whenever the urge moves you. I bet the snow plow people do it all the time!

God, I hope we don't get the snow we got last year! That was crazy!

Thanks to the people who are out there on weekends, and holidays in the early morning hours trying to keep our roads drivable.

To those who are upset that they get paid overtime for it....lets see you get up chrismas morning or any other morning at 4 AM to go miss the day with your family and see if you dont expect to get paid for it. I guess they should just volunteer their time.

How about I appreciate them after winter is over? Not impressed with them the last few winters.

And Doyle, focus all your time and energy with our state economic mess please.
