From the WCLO newsroom:

Beloit College is the latest Rock County organization to announce layoffs.

Interim President Dick Niemiec announced the elimination of up to forty positions at a campus-wide meeting Friday. Spending restrictions and a hiring freeze are already in effect on campus. What the college calls an "employee reduction program" will fall in two phases. First, staff members considering retirement on or before May 31 are asked to come forward. The number of people who leave voluntarily will reduce the number of jobs eliminated in the second phase.

The second phase of positions will be eliminated by the end of this calendar year.

I made a few other posts in another Beloit College headline but I see there is also this one as well. While this post lacks details anyone can see that Beloit College recently underwent construction with a new so called "Science Building" and they are still tearing up old buildings as I passed by the other day. In the other article they are claiming they have a shortfall of a million dollars. But this construction project cost 37 million according to BC own site. My father has worked there for 25+ years and even though I do not speak to him due to personal reasons I find it rather dispicable that my 3 younger siblings living at home relying on his income may have to suffer because some numbskull approved a 37 million dollar project and now that they are finishing it SURPRISE we have a million dollar shortfall. I don't think 40 some employees need to be released, I think the person who approved this construction be held accountable and brought out into the open. Humans make mistakes but when you're mistake may hurt 40 people and their families you need to be fired.

My little Sister-in-Law goes to BC and we're so proud of her! When you grow up in Beloit you never entertain the thought of actually going to Beloit College...at least most people don't. When she was accepted we were all thrilled! She's now a Junior living in German Haus and majoring in languages :) Way to go Sissy! :)

Beloit College is one of the brightest spots about Rock County, too bad most folks are too ignorant to know.

" I know dozens of people who either flipped pizzas or bussed tables for their first job out of college from a liberal arts school"

You are correct and the statistics prove it. Graduates from top tier Liberal Arts colleges do make less in their first job on average than those from taxpayer funded universities. Of course, the same statistics also show that on average the Liberal Arts graduate will earn nearly $1,000,000 moreover the course of their working life but thats another story.

howardzinnfan - Boy are you way off the mark. Liberal arts college graduates are some of the most sought after. I know. I graduated from one.

Liberal arts colleges are a thing of the past. The only thing they are good for are preparing for law school. They don't prepare 22 year olds to join the professional workforce. That is why colleges like Beloit are failing. I know dozens of people who either flipped pizzas or bussed tables for their first job out of college from a liberal arts school.

Beloit College runs on more that just Professors. There is Housekeeping, Physical Plant, and Security (Dispatch) that work 365 days a year. Security works 24 hours a day with a dispatcher on those hours as well. Also Physical Plant and Housekeeping can be called in during the middle of the night if there is an emergency. This is for those who think that there are Summers off for all employees or the for the people who seem to think everyone has holidays off. Some will be there Christmas Eve and Christmas Day while you will be at home with your families.

Also in the Summer time there are programs held there for local kids as well as Wrestling,Basketball Camps, Language Studies..just to name a few. Please don't assume to know about this College if you're not sure. Beloit College offers alot to it's employees and to the community.

I don't know how true this is of Beloit, but in recent years most colleges and universities have made great use of low-paid non-tenure part-time lecturers (although they get to be called professor), with no job security. This is probably where many of the cuts will come, although obviously the college would prefer to cut non-academic staff wherever possible.
.
onelife2live, Beloit is a private liberal arts college. It's expensive, and it has only a limited number of adult/returning students at any given time. It does not have a two-year degree program at all or even more than a handful of night classes. It's basically four years of being a full-time student, which isn't something many people with obligations can afford.

I thought the colleges were filling up with laid off workers going back to school?

spicy, look before you start throwing stones from inside your glass tower. "employees" most likily includes everyone, down to custodial staff. AND btw, professors do work off season and out of class producing paper and projects that bring money and knowlege into the institution. i did have one or two older prof's who were sliding into retirement. it appears that's who they are asking to retire early.

Will they get job retraining? How to work 40 hours a week, what to do when your boss wants you to work in the summer and over the holidays?
