From the WCLO newsroom:

A 19-year-old Beloit man faces up to 60 years in prison for an apparent gang-related drive-by shooting.

The Rock County District Attorney's office says Carlos Salas pleaded guilty Thursday to fatally shooting Fernando Berrios-Linarez last February. Berrios-Linarez was a member of the Latin Kings, which was feuding with Salas' gang, the Maniac Latin Disciples.

Salas told police he only meant to scare Berrios-Linarez and that Berrios-Linarez had pointed a gun at him numerous times in the past.

Salas will be sentenced this February 2nd.

A majority of crimes against people are by their same race. kinda the same with drug territories the same situation. the sad thing here is a life was lost reguardless of his background. IMO Teaching kids in elementary schools on the gang violence and awareness is much needed in our communities. Not middle school as there are some young kids affiliated with having older siblings in gangs and the cycle continues. it is ok to teach your children that telling on someone or something to maybe protect or help them is not "snitching". My grandson was 6 and was afraid to say something as he didnt want to be called a snitch, now that is sad. I have talked to him and said if you feel it is the right thing to tell someone then do it and that honest people and people that care would not think he was a snitch.

We were the He-man women haters. Boy that Alfalfa could sing. Too bad what happened to Spanky when we beat him out of the gang.

Fighting with their own is a sign of self-contempt.

What I don't understand about gangs is that they are trying to eliminate their own race! Both of these gangs were Hispanic. You'd think they would be on the same side. Don't understand the youth of today. Sigh...

There's really a gang called "The Maniac Latin Disciples"???? I mean, really. "The Maniac Latin Disciples"??? That was the best name they could come up with? Sounds like the name of a horrible Salsa band that plays in Edgerton or something. Maybe even Fort Atkinson. Or even more horribly...maybe even Milton. I remember when I was a kid, our gang name was "Hoo-Hoo's Nonney Patrol", and even though we were White boys with a curfew, the weaker White kids were frightened by not only our gang name, but also by our commemorative "GIMME A BREAK" lunch boxes. Believe me, if anyone cracked wise in our direction, Nell Carter's face reigned down on their skull like a monkey pouncing on a granola bar, my friends. <Sigh>. Times have changed.....
