MILWAUKEE (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan announced Thursday he won't be a candidate for House minority leader after being asked by colleagues to lead Republicans in the next Congress.

The Janesville congressman said his wife and three young children are his first priority, and after reflecting on the strain the job would put on his young family, he decided he won't enter his name as a candidate for the post.

But he said in a prepared statement that he shared a hunger for reform in Congress and "will work tirelessly as a policy leader for the Republican Party."

Update on the bailout:
AIG has upped their share to $200 BILLION now, after they reported over $20 BILLION in QUARTERLY losses!. No doubt they will throw another huge executive party with the $$ they looted from the tax payers. Freddie and Fannie both say the bailout $$ they got will NOT BE ENOUGH. The banks who have got the $$ are NOT loaning it it, and instead hoarding the money to pay executives, and buy up weaker banks.
.
This was the most laughable piece of legislation passed in modern history. When the inevitable FAILURE happens we (the tax payer) will be asked for ANOTHER, BIGGER bailout. The $$ is almost gone, and the Auto makers, airlines, still all want a piece of this give away.
.
When all is said and done, history will note this as the primary reason for the collapse on the US economy.

You should try focusing on a new argument.

Ryan's too smart to even bother with the job. I have to agree with the speculation on a Senate run. Or he might just wait until he can hop on the Romney or Pawlenty ticket come 2012.

Understood. Ya know, it's just funny that all the blame comes on on one party "the republicans" when there is plenty of democrats that vote and approve the same issues. At the end of the day, congress votes on everything regardless of the party or regardless of what party the president even is.

spark, ok, I see now. Much like Obama supporters are expecting some big change now that Bush will be gone because he caused the mess in the last 8 years. They naively forget most Dems voted for the Iraq war. Dems were in the lead writing the fed regulation that caused the subprime mortgage disaster. And our county is in worst shape now since more Dems were elected in '06.
-
However, as I just wrote, the Rep/Dem 2 party system is a manufactured fascade of a choice always ending with bigger government, more spending, and less personal liberty.

I never said I agreed with the bailout. What I'm sick of, is every chance some democrat gets, they use it on these blogs to attack the republicans like they were the only ones that voted on it. Get over it and find something else to blame on them. Democrats voted for it too including the new president. It's pretty lame when that's all people can come up with when they want to try and prove a point.

spark - you have to admit the bailout was the biggest boondoggle in the history of the fed government. $1T in money to corporate america... so far, $120B gone to AIG with no accounting for it, billions for spa trips and executive bonuses, no credit improvement for "main st.", and the stock market is DOWN since is was signed.
-
The worst part is Congress has an 11% approval rating, and 87% were voted back in last week! I don't blame Congress for taking special interest money to stay elected, I blame naive voters.

Ryan, Baldwin, Obama...2 sides of the same big government borrow and spend coin. They use different terms but this country ends up in the same place with an $11T deficit for our children and no production to bring back an economy.

"Bailout boy will go wherever the rich, incompetant and greedy need him."

So you would agree that our new President along with Tammy Baldwin are in the pocket of the rich and greedy as well?

Ryan needs to run this State. He would be close to his family in the Governors mansion.

Mark my words, my friends. Paul Ryan passed on this "sinking ship candidacy" ONLY because he can't wait until he can start rolling out his "PAUL RYAN FOR SENATE" campaign. His family comes first? Pleeeeeeeeeeeease. I really love it when politicians say that kind of nonsense as an excuse. You just wait, my friendshhhhhhh. The only guarantee I can make is that Jack Abramoff will not be involved in Ryan's Senate run. Or....will he.......????

Who ever takes charge of the minority party will be in a good position by default. The economy is heading for the worse times since the 1930's. The parallels in the markets and economic indicators are uncanny. When things become brutally bad, the party not in power will be sitting great simply by by default of not being the ones in charge while the whole melt down takes place.

A smart guy, Ryan doesn't want to take command of the sinking ship. The Republican party needs to shake loose the far right wing-nuts and try to attract more people from the center of the political spectrum. Dumping the fringe right and trying to convince moderate independents or Democrats won't be easy after the 8 years of Bush/Cheny and with the Democratic party so popular and powerful right now.
