Two arrests in two hours

BOSCOBEL, Wis. (AP) — A Lafayette County man was arrested twice in less than two hours for drunken driving on Friday night.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department says the 51-year-old man from the Village of Benton was first arrested around 10:30 p.m. for operating while intoxicated.

After being taken to the Boscobel Police Department, the man was released to a responsible party. But authorities near the Hickory Grove Township saw the man and the responsible party who picked him up parked behind the man’s vehicle.

Authorities say the man then took the wheel of the responsible party’s vehicle and drove it into the wayside, which caused authorities to once again administer a field sobriety test and arrest him for operating while intoxicated an hour and 20 minutes after his previous arrest.

I don't really care if it's this guys 1st, 2nd or 3rd DUI, there should never be a 1st. I am attending a funeral today for someone killed in a drinking and driving incident. This was the drivers 1st DUI and he killed someone. I have never driven under the influence. If am going to be drinking, arrangements are made prior to doing so. It just takes being responsible, no ifs' and or butts about it.

Aren't guns used in the commission of a crime taken away and not returned???
*
It should be the same for DUI, why shouldn't it be???

Kind of like guns. Take the guns away and no more murders, no more crime. Get real. Taking a car away will not stop someone from getting behind the wheel. If they want to drive they will drive. The laws in this state have tightened up over the years and there is an increase in OWI's. Do you want to know why?
Lower the BAC and more people will now be legally intoxicated thus getting arrested.

I'm from MN and have lived in Rock County for the past 6 years. In all my years living in Mn I had never been so upset by SO MANY DWI's. In Mn, when you get your 3rd DWI ticket, the car your driving is automatically taken! Doesn't even matter if it is YOUR car or not, it's gone and it is very, very hard to get back. THAT is what Wisconsin needs.

An older friend of mine (he's 46) was just arrested for his third OWI. Someone bailed him out a couple of hours later (he was going the wrong way on 94 when he was pulled over, in case you were wondering). He then got a ride the the police impound to pick up his vehicle. He then drove his vehicle to Pick N Save, got a box of wine and proceed to drink himself stupid. Want to know the best part? He refused to take a test, so he was charged with refusal, not OWI. His license is suspended for three years. He can get an occupational after one year. No jail time. Nothing. And they don't even take in to account the fact that he's had numerous in other states. This is just his third since he moved here four years ago. The first two were two months apart. We need stricter laws in Wisconsin for repeat offenders. There is a petition you can sign online that was started by the husband of the teacher in Oconomowoc that was killed by a person under the influence of rx drugs just two days after he was arrested for his third. She died, as well as her 12 year old daughter and unborn child. This needs to stop. I don't know the link but I think you can find it on TJM4.com. He's trying to pass a law that require repeat OWI offenders to forfeit their vehicles. Not a bad idea. It just might save someone's life.

In Ohio, persons with DUI's have special yellow plates with red letters. It certainly makes identifying a person with DUI's a lot easier.

Maybe something like that would help with Wisconsin's DUI drivers.

One more thought, and I'll go back to whining about MY life... perhaps a sticker should be issued (just like a license renewal sticker) that has to be placed on the plate of every car registered to a repeat offender. A nice bright red or purple that stands out so anyone behind them at least knows the driver is someone to keep an eye on. Anyone caught without one if pulled over gets fined just like anyone who didn't renew their plates. (The more drunk drivings; the more the cost.. or jail time!) I would like to KNOW if I need to be more wary then usual of the guy ahead of me. It would be even better if they had to have bumper stickers but I realize that would be impossible to legally enforce. I understand they can still get away with driving other cars, but THEIR car (if not smashed up from them plowing into an innocent family) would still be their main source of transportation. Anyone else driving their car would just be under more scrutiny to drive carefully. As long as they didn't break the law, they'd be all right. It might be embarrassing, but hey, so what??? It would actually make ME feel better if I had a relative dumb enough to drink and drive, if I knew other people on the roads were informed and could at least have a chance to protect themselves if I wasn't there to "baby-sit".

Any thoughts?

I sure would love a "conclusion" to this story. What did the police do to him the second time? I agree with Dylyn that the police dept. should be held somewhat accountable especially IF they didn't take the SECOND arrest much more seriously. What is it with this society that simply can't accept that drunk driving is STUPID? A "one-time" offender, I can understand extenuating circumstances (unless they blow over a 2.0 or something).. anything after that, is NOT an accident and they obviously need help and/or have a blatant disregard (or non-fear) of the law. We've all had someone we know affected by this, and I KNOW alcoholism is a disease, but part of that disease doesn't MAKE them get behind the wheel of a car against their will.

If we could give tickets for "stupidity", Wisconsin's state budget would be in the black within one month.

If the OWI was this individuals first OWI he was released because by law it is no more than a traffic offense, which means no jail time. If you K-Mart lawyers don't like the OWI laws then contact your state representative/congress person.
Law Enforcement only enforce the LAWS. The do not make the laws. Also, we have a system in this country that you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. This man was arrested. He has not been convicted or proven guilty of anything.

When are we going to get tougher on these people? This is like the 100th drinking and driving report this week. What if this guy had killed someone after being released? I am certain that the victims family would not have found "2 arrests in 2 hours" an amusing headline. I think an entire police dept. would have been in trouble. Maybe they still should be despite the fact that no accident occurred.

My Question is Why was the man released in the first place? He should have spent the nite in jail till he became sober then released. And then when he was arrested the second time that should have carried a week in jail. Thats the problem its all about money anymore these days is is pay the fine and on the way you go people wont changeif they can just buy there way out.

I have Never heard of anyone getting out of the Jail within 2 Hours . Usually the police keep them for a couple hours doing the tests and booking them . He must have had a speedy cop for the computer work .

Hmmm, I wonder if they arrested the "responsible party" for being neglectful? Sounds like they deserved to spend a night in jail too just for blunt stupidity!

ok im sorry but if this man and his "responsible" party are that stupid they both should be sitting in jail and the driver for a very long time. this is insane!
