Janesville School Board member resigns
JANESVILLE — Janesville School Board member Amy Rashkin is stepping down after 13 months in office. She announced her resignation in an e-mail today.
The resignation comes after a tense school board discussion Tuesday about a new administrative position that Superintendent Tom Evert is proposing. Rashkin told fellow board members she was interested in the position and would resign if she decided to apply for it.
Board member Tim Cullen accused Evert of poor judgment because the situation could put the board in the position of deciding whether or not to hire a former board member.
Rashkin said again today that she is looking for employment, and she will consider positions with the school district. Rashkin has a master’s degree in music education and a law degree.
“I believe my resignation will enable me to pursue career opportunities, whatever they may be, without placing fellow board members in an uncomfortable position,” Rashkin said in her statement. “I wish the board, the administration and the School District of Janesville all the best.”

As one who follows JSD news, it always seemed to me that she was more interested in pleasing the administration than leading. This is gathered both from the Gazette and numerous board meetings. It seemed to me that she was not looking out for the best interest of the students but more to please Tom Evert.
It does not surprise me that she is applying for the $36,000 job that Evert wants to make to help the new Parker principal. Tell me this, will this REALLY be a one year job? Also, why would we hire a person to be Parker's principal that would require this special assistant. It seems to me that anyone who is worth hiring won't need this aid. Or is it just so Evert can have his own pet administrator at Parker? Luckily my kids go to Craig, where Dr. Kuehne is incredible.

the school board position was filled by a person interested in education. I think that is what matters. I would prefer to have folks on the board that have intense desire to the education of the children in Janesville. The fact that she is interested in education and was elected to the board is not, in my humble opinion, self-promotion, but rather promoting education and what is best for Janesville schools. I am sorry this became such an issue; however, I do understand the politics behind it. I wish Ms. Rashkin the best in her employment search that will fulfill her personal goals.

Still, it makes me wonder, was this school board position a stepping stone for her ambition as opposed to the public service that it is suppose to be? I realize that the school board is not a lofty position, but it would be nice to fill it with people who are not self-promoters and are instead promoters of education and fiscal responsibility.

The school district has hired former board members before, sometimes before they even resign from the board. The precedent is there. Look back to the 90's.
