Audit reports state food inspections going well
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A new audit says state workers are doing a fairly good job inspecting Wisconsin’s retail food and dairy operations.
The Legislative Audit Bureau report released Friday found that between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2007 almost 99 percent of the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection inspections were conducted when scheduled.
Still, the audit says the agency should develop formal standards for how often inspections should be done on some dairy operations and speed up compliance efforts.
The audit also found the agency did well in handling food emergencies from 2002 to 2007. DATCP Secretary Rod Nilsestuen says in a letter to the audit bureau he’s not surprised at the findings, but acknowledged there’s room for improvement.

Quite an interesting contrast in interpretations there, indeed. I dunno why the AP report is so positive -- or why the JS is so negative.
.
The audit bureau's own take is that it identified "concerns" about inspections, but that the agency took "appropriate action" on food emergencies.

I find it interesting that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel version of this report not only separates the Legislative Audit Bureau's assessments of retail and dairy operations, but also makes it sound as if this report isn't all wine and roses, like the above piece does.
