IRS closes Country Furniture by Schulers
Internal Revenue Service agents showed up in force Wednesday to close a Janesville furniture maker that they allege is behind in quarterly employment and annual unemployment taxes.
The IRS acted Wednesday on four federal tax liens against Country Furniture by Schulers that date back to 1998.
The agents told employees to gather their personal belongings and go home.
Owner Steve Schuler said the IRS has seized his assets and bank accounts. He said he has been in regular contact with the IRS and has been making payments on the back taxes.
Schuler said he will continue to work with the IRS to resolve the matter and hopes to avoid an IRS auction of his business.
In the meantime, Schuler said he will contact all customers about pending orders.

They didn't pay any of their taxes. Wisconsin quarterlies, income, sales tax, fica, un-employment, ANYTHING. Most of the postings here are very true. I had friends who worked there and racing to the bank to cash their checks became a sport. There were many weeks some of them had 3 or 4 checks they couldn't cash. Ask the guy who got taken away by the police because Steve wasn't sending in his child support witholdings that were coming out of his check every week. He says he is suprised that they did this! What I am suprised about is that he isn't rotting in jail already for the stunts he pulled with his employees 401k money.

My nephew was 15 when he was working for these people. He is a responsible and dependable kid and they took advantage of him by paying him with checks that continuously bounced (I'm talking checks for under $50)and promises of making them good if he would continue doing his job. My brother-in-law finally stepped in and said my nephew was done.

Too many personal feelings? That is what a blog was created for.....the personal feelings are not rumors - they are a reality. Schulers may be good and nice people but the fact remains that when you work for someone and are dedicated you should be able to cash your paycheck on payday not 3 weeks later....the workers have bills to pay.

I hope you feel everything's fair now.

It's good they are removing comments. There are too many personal (unverifiable) comments being made on the website as it is.

What makes it a story is that the IRS closed them down. Has the IRS closed that other business?

If they made it easy to "get out" how many businesses would pay their taxes on time?

It is easy to get behind. For every dollar you are delinquent, they tack on a 25% penalty, and then add on 18% interest, which is compounding. So, let's say a business was delinquent on sales tax at $1,000. That $1,000 has now turned into $1,250 plus interest....over a year that $1,000 has turned into $1,450 or more. It's sad, but once it happens it is nearly impossible for a business to dig themselves out.

Thanks for citing the source. My concern here is that some people may begin speculating or posting things they "heard" second-hand. So thank you for backing up your statement.

Please don't post details if you can't or don't cite a source. That only forms more speculation, rumors, lies, and half-truths.
While Schulers itself was impacted by this, so were Steve and Laury Schuler. They deserve their privacy here.

When will people learn that the government and the IRS just do not have a sense of humor. What happened to this outstanding local company to fall so far behind in their obligations?
