Wisconsin Assembly to attempt budget veto overrides
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Assembly will try to override the governor’s vetoes on the state budget repair bill.
Lawmakers passed a bill earlier this month that would solve the state’s $527 million shortfall in part by ordering state agencies to cut $69 million. The bill specified school aid, the state’s road fund and the SeniorCare discount prescription drug program could not be cut.
But Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle used vetoes to make those programs fair game.
Republican Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch says the chamber will try to override those vetoes to again protect those three areas from cuts. Republicans control the Assembly 52-47. They need a two-thirds majority to override a veto.

It's not alright for anyone to not live up to this commitment to fund education. Neither party has disavowed it, therefore they are both bound to it. Yet they continue to under fund education because they want to spend the money elsewhere and the local school boards take the heat for higher property taxes and spending cuts. We continue to re-elect the same people over and over. How can we be surprised that the same irresponsibility continues as well?

On one hand, the state promised to fund a certain percentage of education (2/3 if I remember correctly), yet the state spends more than it takes in year after year. If the Governor is going to cut spending, then there shouldn't be any sacred cows. Local school boards may be saddled with the necessity to reduce spending too, as will other local governments. That's what happens when you live beyond your means. Eventually, you have to stop spending more than you take in.

I don't think its right for him to touch the school budget, further more I do not think its right for him to touch any of them at all.
