From the WCLO newsroom:

Karo, the Janesville Police Department's K9 unit, is ready to start work.

K9 Officer Glen Hageman has worked with the German Shepherd for about a month and a half. Karo stays with the Hageman family, joining Glen and Amy's two young sons and their family dog.

Police Chief Neil Mahan says taxpayers did not provide the funding for the department's second K9 unit. He says an anonymous donor provided the $10,000 for the dog.

10 grand for a K9 unit? What requirements does the dog have to meet to fetch that kind of money? If there is a market for it, I'd be interested in getting into it.

What a wonderful addition to an already outstanding department of Officers. Perhaps once this K-9 unit demonstrates it's success, another unit can be added. Hopefully Janesville citizens will appreciate the value of this team and allow another K-9 to be budgeted for...let's see, no wages, no vacation time, no worker's compensation, no overtime, and the list goes on. The costs incurred for upkeep of the K-9 officer is far less than the adminstrative cost for a human officer.

It's about time that Janesville is getting their "drug force" together instead of using Beloit's K-9 unit all the time.

I thinks that having a K-9 unit will enhance the police force, and knowing that the tax dollars did not have to be used makes it a "WIN-WIN" situation.
I Know for a fact that this story will come under some bad reviews by some people, and some will make stupid comments to undermine the reasoning of the decision to have one (a K-9 unit)..
But after living and working in a Large city and seeing demonstrations from someone who trained them, they are needed even in JVL..
good luck to "Officer Karo" and his partner (and his new family)
