LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — La Crosse police didn’t have to go far to apprehend one underage drinker this weekend.

Authorities say the 17-year-old girl was arrested Saturday morning after her car struck a tree near the police department.

According to a police report, she and her two passengers had been drinking in nearby parks.

The report says the girl’s car hit the tree about 3:45 a.m., some 100 feet from the police station. One passenger fled on foot but police apprehended him.

All three people in the car had minor injuries.

Police say a preliminary breath test indicated that the girl had a blood-alcohol level of 0.126 percent, more than 1½ times the legal limit.

The police report says she was arrested for causing injury while driving drunk.

of course you are right, ncpanfan. I did my "fair share" of teenage antics when I was that age. BUT, I also knew the difference between having a little rope and how much I would be hanged by. Perhaps I jumped the gun on this, and I apologize if that is the case.

It just seems to me that parents are not doing their jobs, for the most part, anymore.

It sounds like you (and other parents that comment on here) are living up to your responsibility. Thanks!

I have a 17 and an 18 year old and yes I know they are home in bed at those hours also but I also have to trust that the times they might be at a friend's house that they haven't lied to me and I have instilled the values they need so that I don't have to stay up til 4 in the morning driving by the house to make sure they are there and don't leave... I agree there should be stiffer consequences to these types of actions so that maybe kids learn that if they make bad decisions that they will be punished.

Ms Sassy: I totally agree that more parents need to act like parents and not friends but before we jump to that conclusion isn't it possible that she could have told her parents she was staying at a friend's house and they were at home in bed assuming that she was where she claimed to be? Kids do tell lies to their parents sometimes. Some parents do all they can but you can't be with them 24/7 to make sure they are doing what you have taught them to do and not out getting in trouble??? And perhaps that isn't what happened and it could very well be a case of parents just not parenting but on the other hand...

why are parents the first to be blamed? perhaps because, like it or not, the PARENTS are responsible for their child's actions until age 18. like mopsy said: I KNOW where my kids are at 3:45 am. at home, in bed, sleeping. The parents who do not impose a reasonable amount of care/concern/responsibility for the children THEY decided to bring in to this world are costing us taxpayers billions of dollars! Why aren't people more angry about this? The kids who do what they want, grow up to do what they want and land in jails and prisons and we get to pay for it. This is not a "joke" anymore and the responsible people in the state should not be forced to clean up after the irresponsibility of parents who are raising irresponsible kids!

Why are the parents the first to be blamed? We need to hold our young adults responsible for their actions. As for a curfew, thats a joke right, police have higher priorities than baby sitting kids.

Obviously, another example of wonderful parenting. I'm sure the parents were probably passed out drunk someplace, too. Leadership by example. If people can't control their own offspring then they shouldn't be contributing to an overpopulated world...especially more idiots like these kids. Another proud Wisconsin drunk story. This state and these parents should be ashamed!!!

I thought it was a clever headline. Now, where can the girl get some clever parents? I know exactly where my teens are at that hour. At home in bed!
