Memorial Day parade route, main ceremony location changed
The Janesville Memorial Day parade route and location of the holiday’s main ceremony have been changed.
“We knew we would have to alter the route if Traxler Park didn’t dry out,’’ said Tom Stehura, parade organizer, who also is a member of the Janesville Patriotic Society and Vietnam Veterans of America local chapter.
And that’s what’s happened after spring flooding of the Rock River, including Veterans Plaza at Traxler Park, downtown.
“There’s still some standing water there,’’ Stehura said Wednesday.
More rain is forecast for Sunday and Monday and again Friday, May 23, he said.
Even without more rain, Stehura doubted the ground at Traxler Park would dry out enough to be able to walk on it.
The parade will still start at the corner of Dodge and High streets and move onto East Milwaukee Street, but it will continue south on Main Street and end at Court Street.
The main ceremony will now take place in Lower Courthouse Park, corner of Main and Court streets, instead of at Veterans Plaza in Traxler Park.

I am asking anyone in the Janesville area to register your Memorial Day Event at VetFriends.com. They have a nationwide Memorial Day Event directory and it could garner more attendees in the area as VetFriends.com has a member enrollment of 858,000 Veterans! Have a great Memorial Day weekend and thank you for your remembrance!

Why not end it down by Dawson field? Afterall it has alot more space and then more people could line Main St. to watch it, I think it would be great for all the residents that live along Main St. and as it goes by the National Gaurd they could all be out there to salute theirs and see others, or am I asking way too much? So the parade might be A little longer, who cares we only have 1 memorial day parade A year lets give them A good one this year and appreciate what our vetrans have given us, the freedom to have such A parade afterall!!!!!
