Janesville firefighters remained on scene of a condominium fire that broke out at 4301 E. Milwaukee St. early this morning. The call came in at 5:26 a.m. when police were asked to block off traffic on streets in the area.

Owner Nancy MacDonald was awakened by a smoke detector. When she went to see what was happening, she saw smoke in the basement then fire in the bathroom before waking up her grandson and his girlfriend who were sleeping in the basement, said Janesville Fire Department Shift Commander Bill Ruchti. All three got out of the house safely before police and firefighters arrived on scene.

Although the cause of the fire is unknown, ‘it appears to have started in the shower area of the basement,’ Ruchti said. Damage was estimated at $15,000 and left fire, heat and smoke damage to the basement and smoke damage to the first floor, Ruchti said.

Firefighters remained on scene three hours after the initial call came in to reduce carbon monoxide levels and vent the building. The local chapter of the American Red Cross responded to find housing for the three, Ruchti said.
