County to assess land donation

By Ann Marie Ames ( Contact )   May 8, 2008 - 6:56 p.m.

JANESVILLE--The Rock County Board on Thursday voted unanimously to move forward with negotiations over a parcel of property that could be donated to the county.

The county has 90 days now to perform environmental due diligence on the property and determine what it would cost to demolish two buildings on the site.

Attorney John A. Buck, 199 E. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, has offered to donate 3.6 acres of land along the Rock River in Fulton Township. The property at 9236 County F is on the north bank of the river about a quarter mile upstream from Indianford Dam.

Assistant Rock County Administrator Phil Boutwell said the donation is “valuable.” He doesn’t anticipate any problems will prevent the county from accepting the property.

janesvillean, I'm corrected. Thanks.

I know all those curves. Didn't know about the quirks with the addresses.

Yes, that would be the same John A. Buck. Who knows why he has this parcel, but he probably has hundreds of parcels in Wisconsin alone.
.
There is an E. Lake Shore Drive -- it's the spot where the drive curves east to get around the downtown, a couple of blocks north of the John Hancock Center. The north-facing row of apartment buildings there has long been one of the most exclusive addresses in Chicago. Among Buck's neighbors in 199 E. Lake Shore Dr. is Oprah.

The address is stated as 199 E. Lake Shore Drive. Lake Shore Drive runs north and south. Seems like the address should be either 199 N. Lake Shore Drive or 199 S. Lake Shore Drive.

Why would the town of Fulton go along with this? The story mentions that the parcel is located in their township, and with the value of waterfront property being what it is, I would think the town would want to keep every square inch of taxable property on their tax rolls.

I wonder if John A. Buck, Attorney, is the same John A. Buck, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the John Buck Company in Chicago? Their website looks like they're involved in all sorts of real estate deals. Looking at all the high rises they manage, I wonder what they're doing here?
