April was second safest on record: DOT
The state Department of Transportation says last month was the second-safest April on record in more than 60 years in terms of traffic deaths.
The DOT recorded 37 deaths, compared to 63 in April of last year. The state's five-year average for traffic fatalities in April is 59.
The number of deaths for the year is also down. Through April 30, 151 people died in Wisconsin crashes. That's 64 fewer than at the same point last year.
Dennis Hughes, the chief of safety programs for the Wisconsin State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety, said the decline is encouraging but noted that the traditionally high-fatality months are still ahead.
The safest April on record was 10 years ago, when 34 people died in crashes.
