MADISON (AP)—Around 350 people have been arrested at the Mifflin Street block party, but there have been no major problems with the annual event, police said.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said that Saturday’s party has brought less than 10,000 people to the street and that there were probably still 6,000 in the area.

The majority of the arrests have been for alcohol-related issues, including open intoxicants, underage drinking and glass containers on the street, DeSpain said.

And criticizing UW-Madison students because they decided to have a beer on Saturday isn't childish? I don't mean to attack cardtrader any more than I already have, but you're basically asking me to elaborate.
It's incredibly difficult to get into that school these days. Saying that these kids are some of the better students in the state would be an understatement. If you want to throw insults at them, at least check your spelling first.

proudauntie ----------Authorities said nearly 400 people were booked into the Dane County Jail on Saturday. But, officials caution the number is deceiving because there were no major incidents

There is no excuse for turning a blind eye to allowing underage drinking, Zero tolerance!!!!
Next dumb comment you probally did it when you where young, wrong!!!!! I started at 21 and didn't stop until 31 lost 10 years of my life to alcoholism. Not everyone is an alcoholic this is true but can you or anybody else pick who they are going to be? It's like playing russian roulette spin and take a chance. All I'm saying is life is much to short and valueable to waste it drinking.

Also speaking from experience on Mifflin, it's not like it's some big riot. It's a large scale cookout, basically. It expands most of West Mifflin, and there are police everywhere so things don't get out of hand. It's not a big surprise that college kids like to drink. Don't blow it out of proportion. After college kids grow up, your future leaders will turn out just fine.

I'm sure our current leader was quietly studying in his dorm room at age 20 on Cinco de Mayo.

Yes, cardtrader, these are your future leaders. As someone who both lives in Janesville, and is a student at UW-Madison, I assure you that the future looks much more promising than the bag of **** handed to our generation.
If you or anyone else has anything to say about your "future leaders", I suggest you take a long, hard look at who raised them.

It is the capital of a state known for its drinking. It is just common news. That is why there isn't a fuss.

As someone who has been to the Mifflin St. party it is not what you guys think. 350 arrests is misleading. If they are going to give you a ticket, for anything, you are arrested. They then take to you a holding area, issue a ticket, and let you be on your way. As stated in the article most were for open intoxicants.... even taking a single step on a side walk with beverage in hand will get you "arrested" It is not that bad of a party and it is not just a bunch of "drunk punks". It is a good time had by all we minor issues.

I disagree bjordan. I think Janesville is portrayed very poorly in the state, KKK, GM, screeming meemees to name a few. It is apparent we have our problems and we can't hide them. The media has chosen to make us look like hicks.

I'm sure the folks in Madison got a few chuckles at Janesville's expense over the Screamin' Meemee's news items from a few weeks ago. But unless the Janesville city council issues a press release ridiculing the city of Madison, it seems a bit uncalled for to paint the whole city of Janesville as a bunch of self-righteous hypocrites.

I'm not saying that. Basically all I'm saying is that whenever something happens in another city, janesville is quick to put that city down. Every city has crime...even Janesville.

bjordan....The rest of us would be thankful if you would explain how Janesville hides it crimes. Are you suggesting that the police are fudging the crime stats? Or is it something much more clandestine and sinister? Please, please, inform us!

all I'm saying is that every city has its crime but Janesville trys to hide theirs by putting other cities down. Its wisconsin's capital....and what because of that its not suppose to have any crime? Do you actually think businesses are not gonna come to Madison because of that. I don't see any businesses leaving because of it. Get serious!

270 yeah its Madison...so what. At least they're honest. Unlike Janesville who hides their problems and make it seem like its the best place in America. Some Janesville residents are so quick to put down other cities like Beloit, Madison etc. People here need to look in their own backyard because janesville do have crimes that occur. Some people are terrified to even drive in Beloit....which is crazy. People need to wakeup and stop putting other cities down!

270 arrested, and "no major problems"
Only in Madison.
